Forty-four years after The Beatles played Shea Stadium in 1965, Paul McCartney returned to Citi Field for the first of three sold-out shows.

First off, the man looked great. I’m sure he dyes his hair and has had a face lift, but if I look half that good at 67 I’ll feel pretty good.

The place was packed and McCartney alluded two or three times to the Aug. 15, 1965 show and how bad the sound system was and how the Fab Four couldn’t hear a thing “because of all the screaming girls.”

He flashed a grin, cupped his hand to his ear and awaited for the ladies to scream once again. They faithfully obliged.

“Long time since I was here,” McCartney said. “I’ve got a feeling that we’re going to have a little bit of fun tonight.”

He played a ton of Beatles, Wings and solo stuff, dedicating one song to his late wife, Linda, and another to John Lennon. He also played “Something” in honor of George Harrison.

A diverse musician, he played bass, guitar, mandolin, ukulele and piano.

I thought I was leaving 3 or 4 times, but he kept coming out again and again.

Here’s the full setlist:

“Drive My Car”
“Jet”
“Only Mama Knows”
“Flaming Pie”
“Got To Get You Into My Life”
“Let Me Roll It”
“Highway”
“The Long and Winding Road”
“My Love”
“Blackbird”
“Here Today”
“Dance Tonight”
“Calico Skies”
“Mrs. Vanderbilt”
“Eleanor Rigby”
“Sing the Changes ”

CRONKITE DEAD AT 92

I got home from the show after midnight to learn that legendary anchorman Walter Cronkite had died at 92.

My wife Jen and I actually shared a small plane from New York to Martha’s Vineyard with Cronkite a few years back. He looked the same as he always did, but was frail and needed a wheelchair once we got off the plane.

I only remember the end of the Cronkite Era on television, but every journalist knows Cronkite was the gold standard in reporting and broadcasting.

Known as “the most trusted man in America,” millions of Americans welcomed him into their living room each night to tell them about the Vietnam War and other historic events like the moon landing, Watergate and the Mideast peace process.

He was the man who informed most of American that John F. Kennedy had been assassinated in Dallas in 1963.

Times have changed and we’ll never see another man like this one.

A source close to the New England Playaz club said the Hoyas had not offered McCrea, who visited campus unofficially last week.

VETRONE WANTS TO NAME FDU COURT AFTER GREEN

NEPTUNE, N.J. — It isn’t often that a basketball coach wants to dedicate his school’s court to the guy he replaced.

But that’s exactly what’s going on at Fairleigh Dickinson University in New Jersey.

Greg Vetrone, who replaced fired coach Tom Green (pictured), wants to name the court at the Rothman Center after his predecessor.

“My goal one day, my dream is to play on Tom Green Court one day,” Vetrone said last week at the Reebok Summer Classic. “I wish they would name the court after him. The guy’s the winningest coach in the history of the school and he’s the winningest coach in NEC history. They should name the court after him.”

Under Green, Fairleigh Dickinson failed to make the Northeast Conference tournament for the second consecutive season in 2008-09, finishing with a 7-23 record. Green’s career mark was 407-351.

He was fired in June after 26 seasons on the job — and he wasn’t happy about it.

“I’ve been a coaching ambassador for this university for 26 years. I don’t call this place work, I call it home,” Green told The Record of Hackensack (N.J.). “Firing me right now shows a total lack of respect for me as a person, as a coach and as a loyal employee over the last 26 years.”

Vetrone, who has known Green for 26 years but had been on his staff just one year as an assistant in his second go-round with the program, was hired on an interim basis.

Asked what Green was up to now, Vetrone said he didn’t know. Presumably he’s looking for work.

“This decision kills my career. To get fired in June of year 26 kills a career. I’d hoped to coach another five or six years before I even thought about retiring,” Green told The Record. “It not only affects me, but I’ve got three assistant coaches and two of them have families. There are no Division I college basketball head coaching jobs available in June.”

Vetrone said the transition to head coach hasn’t been easy because of his friendship with Green.

“It’s tough because coach Green and I are such great friends,” Vetrone said. “I worked for him 1988. I came back last year, so I love the University. It’s my second time there.

“I love Tom Green. It’s been difficult. Hopefully, in time he’ll get back with the administration.”

She should show up to more games. I’m sure Yankee fans would appreciate it, and it can only help Alex get out of his slump. Oh by the way, Rodriguez passed non-steroid-using Yankee great Reggie Jackson and now has 564 career dingers, good for 11th all-time.

“You’re so focused on playing the game and playing it right every day that I’ve never stopped to see [who he's passing],” Rodriguez told the Daily News. “But when you see Reggie – Reggie is such a huge name in our game and he’s also Mr. October and a close friend – it’s big.”

Jackson, who unlike Rodriguez has never been liked to steroids, was on hand for the milestone.

“Today is a day for me to come and tip my cap and say congratulations and keep hitting home runs for the Yankees,” Jackson told the New York Post. “I’m a fan of Alex’s. . . . The negativity that surrounds the steroids is certainly not something that I carry over to him. I do appreciate the fact that he admitted his mistakes, and so from here we move forward. Judgment on him will be passed with his next 7½ years with the Yankees.

“I don’t vote [for the Hall of Fame],” Jackson added. “If he doesn’t make it on the first 15 years of the ballot, I get a chance to vote [on the Veterans Committee], but here is a guy who is going to wind up with 700 or 800 home runs.

“He works as hard as any player I’ve ever seen around the game. They used to say about me, ‘Reggie Jackson, love him or hate him, you cannot ignore him.’ Alex Rodriguez goes to the post every day, unless he goes to the hospital, and that you have to tip your hat to with all the adversity he has gone through.”

**This ongoing verbal battle between Bill Simmons and Clippers coach Mike Dunleavy is really getting entertaining.

Dunleavy went on Colin Cowherd’s show and said Simmons was a “joke writer” who had “no credibility.”

That sparked the following tweets from Simmons:

Fire Dept. and she says entertainer Michael Jackson is dead at the age of 50.

TMZ is confirming the news on its Website, saying Jackson suffered cardiac arrest earlier this afternoon at his Holmby Hills home and paramedics were unable to revive him.

Various other sources have since confirmed the news.

The news happens on the same day that 70s icon Farrah Fawcett also passed away of cancer.

I can only imagine that this news will overshadow the NBA Draft tonight…I’ll be blogging live from the Draft in NYC.

Farrah Fawcett was the bomb back in the day. And yes, kids, that’s how the girls used to wear their hair.

Farrah died on Wednesday at 62 after what was, by all accounts, a tough and courageous battle with cancer.

Word is that she could receive a posthumous Emmy for her role in Farrah’s Story,” the documentary that detailed her fight.

In the late 1970s, Fawcett starred alongside Kate Jackson and Jacklyn Smith as the original Charlie’s Angels.

Jackson was the smart one, Smith was the glamorous one and Farrah was the super-sexy one.

Her post-Charlie’s career never quite panned out although she did garner some positive reviews here and there.

Now she’s gone, and a part of my childhood is, too.

In a somewhat related topic, I sold my entire collection of 200 records to a guy who runs a record store on 12th St. here in New York.

He said records are making a comeback with kids today — apparently they want something more substantive in their hands than Ipods.

But the grand total for my life’s collection?

$100

He was interested in the Hendrix, Stones, Zeppelin, Who and Beatles stuff (who isn’t?), less so in the Billy Joel, Elton John and Rod Stewart.

“I could fill a whole store with Billy Joel and Elton John,” he said. “Nobody wants that stuff.”

So there you have it, two parts of my childhood and teenage years– Farrah and my record collection — all gone in one day.

You know what’s next, right?

The massive baseball card collection up in my parent’s attic. I have complete Topps sets from 1970-82 in Excellent condition. So if anyone knows a reputable and fair baseball card appraiser (preferably one who will come to my house), shoot me an email at zagoria@hotmail.com.
