Kevin Boyle Praises Anderson, Muhammad

By Adam Zagoria on April 06, 2012, 12:41PM

How would you like to coach a team that included Kyle Anderson, Shabazz Muhammad and a whole bunch of other future NBA players?

That’s exactly the position Montverde (Fla.) coach Kevin Boyle is in this week as he leads Team USA into Saturday night’s Nike Hoop Summit game.

In this video from Tim Brown of OregonLive.com, Boyle, the former Elizabeth (N.J.) St. Patrick coach, went out of his way to praise the work ethic and talent of Anderson, the 6-9 point guard signed with UCLA, and Muhammad, a 6-6 wing who is considering UCLA, Kentucky and Duke.

“Obviously, Kyle Anderson from St. Anthony’s in Jersey City [is] just a terrific player,” Boyle said. “He really understands how to use his speed. He’s not super fast, but he’s super bright and really knows how to use angles on defense. Offensively, he’s versatile, he can play three or four positions.

“Shabazz Muhammad, obviously, a big-time athlete, big-time scorer…[Those] guys should be really important in the game on Saturday night.”

Kevin Boyle Rooting for Seton Hall, Rutgers

By Adam Zagoria on January 07, 2012, 4:38PM

During his 20+-plus years as the head coach of Elizabeth (N.J.) St. Patrick, Kevin Boyle ran one of the top programs in the nation, producing players like Dexter Strickland, Kyrie Irving and Michael Kidd-Gilchrist.

Rutgers and Seton Hall often tried to land those players, and sometimes, as in the case of Shaheen Holloway (Seton Hall), they succeeded.

But more often than not, Boyle’s top players went to places like North Carolina (Strickland), Duke (Irving) and Kentucky (Kidd-Gilchrist).

“You always want to give the local schools a fair chance to recruit the kid, and you’d like to see them do well…but it’s also hard if you’re building, if it’s Seton Hall and Rutgers and Duke comes in, and North Carolina comes in,” Boyle told SNY.tv by phone this week. (more…)

Florida Needs to Go Big in Recruiting

By Adam Zagoria on January 05, 2012, 11:20AM

Florida needs to go big.

The No. 13 Gators are loaded with guards now and have several signed or committed for 2012 and 2013, but they need to address their frontcourt needs immediately.

If sophomore center Patric Young jumps to the NBA after this season – DraftExpress.com projects him as the No. 16 pick in the Draft – “you lose the whole frontcourt,” a source close to the Florida staff told FiveStarBasketball.com.

Thus, the Gators are working hard on landing bigs in 2012 and ’13.

They are involved with Pittsburgh transfer Khem Birch, as well as 2012 late signees Anthony Bennett, Ricardo Gathers and JaKarr Sampson.

Dakari Johnson Must Sit a Year at Montverde

By Adam Zagoria on August 03, 2011, 4:23PM

Dakari Johnson, a 6-foot-11 rising sophomore, must will sit out the upcoming school year after transferring to Montverde (Fla.) Academy from Elizabeth (N.J.) St. Patrick, headmaster Kasey Kesselring told the Orlando Sentinel.

According to Florida High School Athletic Association rules, a player following his coach to a different school is ineligible to compete for a year, Kesselring told the paper.

“The biggest thing is the kid is a great kid and is going to be a great player one day,” current Montverde and former St. Patrick coach Kevin Boyle told SNY.tv by phone. “Obviously, we feel awful that he won’t be able to play this year. We had told him and his mom that this would be a possibility a couple months ago so they knew coming in that this was very much possible coming but they still thought it was advantageous. It’s a great school academically to come to. They knew well this could happen.” (more…)

Dakari Johnson Headed to Loaded Montverde Team

By Adam Zagoria on July 21, 2011, 9:27PM

After leading St. Patrick High School to national prominence over the past two decades, Kevin Boyle has no intention of slowing down at his new home.

Boyle, who shocked many in the basketball world by leaving St. Pat’s for Montverde (Fla.) Academy in April, told SNY.tv that 6-foot-11, 263-pound center Dakari Johnson is coming to Montverde.

“He’s enrolled at the school,” Boyle said by phone. (more…)
