Wagner’s Dan Hurley Says ‘Let ‘er rip’

By Adam Zagoria on March 01, 2012, 10:58PM

Two years ago, Dan Hurley was coaching in high school at St. Benedict’s Prep in Newark.

Now he’s coaching a 25-win college team that is one victory from playing for an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

“Now it’s just let it rip, man, go for it,” Hurley told SNY.tv after the No. 2-seeded Seahawks beat No. 7 Central Connecticut, 87-77, to move into the Northeast Conference semifinals against Robert Morris on Sunday at noon. “We’ve had an unbelievable year. We’re one game away from playing to be a part of March Madness so go out and let it rip.” (more…)

With St. Pat’s Closing, Hurley Says It’s End of An Era

By Adam Zagoria on February 26, 2012, 3:27PM

For nearly two decades, St. Patrick and St. Anthony forged one of the most bitter and hotly contested high school basketball rivalries in the nation.

A year ago, the two North Jersey schools were undefeated and ranked first and second nationally when they met in the unofficial national championship game at Rutgers.

St. Anthony beat St. Patrick in that game and went on to claim its fourth mythical national championship.

Now, with the news that St. Patrick will close its doors at the end of the year, Hall of Fame St. Anthony coach Bob Hurley says it’s the end of an era. (more…)

Like Jeremy Lin, UCLA-Bound Anderson Has Asian Heritage

By Adam Zagoria on February 18, 2012, 3:39PM

NEW YORK – Kyle Anderson has been answering the question all his life.

No, it’s not, “Which college are you going to play for?’ or “What position will you play at the next level?”

It’s, “What is your ethnic background?” or more directly, “What are you?”

“People do ask me all the time,” the 6-foot-9 Anderson told SNY.tv hours before UCLA lost to St. John’s, 66-63, at Madison Square Garden. “I tell them my mother’s parents have Jamaican and Asian descents.” (more…)

Can St. Anthony Go Undefeated Again?

By Adam Zagoria on January 17, 2012, 11:00AM

After a pair of weekend wins over St. Peter’s Prep at the Dan Finn Classic and over Lithonia (Ga.) Miller Grove at the Hoophall Classic, Bob Hurley’s St. Anthony Friars are a perfect 12-0.

Following last year’s 33-0 season that culminated in Hurley’s fourth mythical national championship, the Friars have now won 45 games in a row.

Their last loss came in the New Jersey state tournament to Trenton Catholic on March 13, 2010.

UCLA-bound senior point guard Kyle Anderson, who transferred to St. Anthony from now-defunct Paterson Catholic at the start of the 2010-11 season, is now 45-0 in a St. Anthony uniform. (more…)

By Adam Zagoria on January 17, 2012, 10:01AM

Dan Hurley and the Wagner Seahawks are riding the school’s first seven-game winning streak since the 1979-80 season.

With a 14-3 record, a 9-2 non-conference mark and a 5-1 record in the Northeast Conference, Wagner is off to its best start since the 1955-56 campaign.

Yet as good as things are right now, the future could be even brighter.

That’s because Dwaun Anderson, a former Mr. Basketball in Michigan, began practicing with the team last Tuesday and will be eligible next season. (more…)

Bobby Hurley Says Kyle Anderson Has Highest Upside in St. Anthony’s Storied History

By Adam Zagoria on January 06, 2012, 9:36PM

The list of the greatest basketball players in St. Anthony’s storied history usually comes down to a handful of names.

Bobby Hurley, “Mandy” Johnson, Rodrick Rhodes, Jerry Walker, David Rivers and Tyshawn Taylor are among those in the conversation.

Bobby Hurley led his team to the inaugural Tournament of Champions title in 1989 and went on to appear in three Final Fours and lead Duke to back-to-back NCAA titles.

Walker was a four-year starter, won four state titles and lost only five games in his career under legendary coach Bob Hurley. (more…)

By Adam Zagoria on January 02, 2012, 9:17AM

HACKENSACK, N.J. — After not playing each other for more than a decade, St. Anthony facing off against St. Benedict’s could now be an annual affair.

“It’s a good game for us,” Hall of Fame St. Anthony coach Bob Hurley told SNY.tv Sunday after his team won its 40th straight game, 51-50, over St. Benedict’s at the New Year’s Jump Off at Hackensack High School.

“We want to play Jersey games. I’m an old guy, I don’t want to do much traveling.

Josh Brown to Temple Now Official

By Adam Zagoria on November 22, 2011, 11:12AM

Josh Brown’s verbal commitment to Temple is done after the 2013 St. Anthony point guard and St. Anthony assistant coach Eric Harrield spoke again with Temple head coach Fran Dunphy Monday night.

“He verbally committed last night to Temple,” St. Anthony coach Bob Hurley told SNY.tv.

At 6-foot-2 and just a junior, Brown has a big upside going forward.

“He’s converting from being just an athlete, like a wing player,” said Hurley, coach of the reigning mythical national champs. “He’s been moved over to play the point and his on-the-job training began last April or so. In the first stage it’s gone very well. He has a good personality to be a point guard. He’s a very friendly kid. He’s a good talker. He plays extremely hard. (more…)
