Anthony Davis Bursting Onto National Scene

By Adam Zagoria on June 28, 2010, 2:01PM

Anthony Davis is ranked as the No. 2 power forward in the Class of 2011, yet hardly anyone knew who he was before this spring.

After growing seven inches in a year, Davis is now 6 feet, 9 inches and 187 pounds.

“He went through a major, major growth spurt,” said Anthony Davis Sr. “He’s eating us out of house and home, for sure. He just won’t gain the weight.”

Davis burst onto the national scene this past spring and was named Most Promising Prospect at the recent NBA Top 100 Camp in Charlottesville, Va. (more…)

6-11 Malcolm Gilbert A Defensive Force

By Adam Zagoria on June 14, 2010, 11:20PM

NEW YORK — Malcolm Gilbert didn’t score a single point during Sunday’s 17-and-under Gold championship game at the Rumble in the Bronx at Fordham University.

But at 6 feet, 11 inches tall, Gilbert was a major factor in helping East Coast Elite down Andre Drummond and the Connecticut Basketball Club, 63-58, for the title.

Gilbert had five blocks on Drummond, the No. 1 recruit in the Class of 2012, in the first half and six total blocks in the game. He also finished with 9 rebounds — 6 offensive, 3 defensive — before fouling out with 54 seconds remaining.

“He’s intriguing because of his upside,” East Coach Elite coach Terrell Myers said before the final. “What people don’t understand is, they see 6-11, they look at him as an offensive player. He’s not an offensive player, he’s a defensive player. (more…)

Gritty Performance Earns Arcidiacono Praise

By Adam Zagoria on June 03, 2010, 11:55AM

Ryan Arcidiacono drove to the hoop for a reverse layup last Friday night at the Bob Gibbons Tournament of Champions in North Carolina when an opposing player undercut him and sent him flying to the floor.

“The kid shoved me and took my legs out and my face hit the ground pretty hard,” recalled Arcidiacono, a 16-year-old rising junior at Neshaminy (Pa.) High School. “It just hurt. It felt like I had a golf ball in my face. I had blood on my hands. It was just gushing blood.”

It was after midnight when Gene Rice, Arcidiacono’s AAU coach with the PA Playaz, took his 6-foot-4, 190-pound point guard to the Wake Forest University Medical Center where he took eight stitches in the forehead.

“The doctor said if it was his kid he wouldn’t let me play [the next day],” Arcidiacono said. (more…)

Biruta Waiting on RU; Roberts Likes St. Joe’s

By Adam Zagoria on April 17, 2010, 6:18PM

NEW YORK — Gilvydas Biruta can’t make a move until the Fred Hill mess is cleared up at Rutgers.

Biruta, a 6-foot-8 forward originally from Lithuania, has asked to be released from his Letter of Intent at the Big East school, but it has not been granted.

Rutgers is apparently waiting to either officially fire Hill or reach a financial settlement with him before proceeding with the St. Benedict’s Prep forward.

“I’m just waiting for my release from Rutgers,” Biruta said after putting up a double-double of 10 points and 14 rebounds as the Suburban Team beat the City Team, 137-133, in the Jordan Brand Regional Game Saturday at MSG.

Biruta has taken only one official visit — to Rutgers — and is considering a number of other schools for his college destination. (more…)

Source: Hewitt Turns Down St. John’s

By Adam Zagoria on March 25, 2010, 1:35PM

SYRACUSE – Georgia Tech coach Paul Hewitt called St. John’s at about 1 p.m. Thursday and said he would not accept the job, according to a source with direct knowledge.

“He’s not taking the job,” the source said.

Hewitt has a wife, three daughters, parents and a younger brother in the Atlanta area and cited “family reasons,” among others.

“My family and I have developed deep ties to Georgia Tech and the city of Atlanta,” Hewitt said in a statement. “I strongly believe in what Georgia Tech can do for young people, and I am committed to returning the Tech basketball program to the level of success our fans have come to expect. We took a step in that direction this past season, and I fully intend to continue on that path.”

Hewitt met St. John’s AD Chris Monasch Tuesday night in Atlanta to hear him out, but decided to stay in Atlanta instead. (more…)
