“There was a series of events that led me down the path to determine that I needed to make a change in leadership of the men’s basketball program and terminate coach Crews’ contract,” Anderson stated. “I am very disappointed with some things that have come to my attention in recent days and I have decided that it is in the best interests of the basketball program and the institution to terminate our relationship.”

In seven years as Army’s head coach, Crews registered a 60-139 (.302) record. He led Army to the Patriot League Tournament semifinals each of the last three seasons. Army finished 11-19 overall a year ago.

Anderson said that a national search for Crews’ replacement will begin immediately. Jeff Goodman of FoxSports.com reports that Anderson has reached out to including Arizona State associate head coach Dedrique Taylor, St. John’s assistant Fred Quartlebaum, Navy assistant Eugene Burroughs, Wake Forest director of basketball operations Walt Corbean and St. Mary’s associate head coach Kyle Smith.

“Sal Mentesana possesses a wealth of experience and we are very excited to welcome him into the Rutgers basketball family,” Rutgers head coach Fred Hill said in a statement. “Sal and I have an established relationship and I’m confident that his veteran perspective will be of great benefit to our program.”

Carter, who played at Rutgers from 1987-91 and later was an assistant, changes jobs.

“Recruiting is the lifeblood of any program,” Hill said. “Craig Carter has always been a tremendous ambassador for Rutgers Basketball. He has done a terrific job of building and cultivating relationships in the Metropolitan area. Craig will oversee and coordinate all of our recruiting efforts going forward.”

Mentesana, 61, is a Providence alum.

In 15 seasons as a head coach, he posted a record of 176-242. He has ties to the Hill family, having spent four years as an assistant coach to Brian Hill, Fred’s uncle, at Lehigh.

Numerous sources said Hill wanted assistant Jimmy Carr to take the demotion, but Carr wouldn’t have it.

Carr and Darren Savino continue to be listed as assistant coaches on the school’s Website, but Rutgers does not have a single African-American assistant.

LEGENDS CLASSIC MATCHUPS ANNOUNCED

Rutgers will face UMass and Michigan State will take on Florida in the semifinals of the Legends Classic on Nov. 27 at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, N.J.

The games will tip at 5:30 p.m. and the final tips at 5:30 on Nov. 28.

This interview with Arizona Coach Sean Miller at the Reebok All-American Camp is the second in a series of interviews with Division 1 head coaches conducted at camps this summer.

PHILLY –Just a couple of months ago, Sean Miller was the head coach of a Xavier team that had become a perennial NCAA Tournament fixture.

But in April, Miller shifted addresses, moving from Cincinnati to Arizona, where he became the heir to a program Lute Olson built into a perennial national powerhouse.

Arizona won the 1997 NCAA championship under Olson and has appeared in three other Final Fours.

“I’m fortunate,” Miller said at the recent Reebok All-American Camp. “One thing about college basketball, it changes so dramatically with winning and success. And our success at Xavier and so many of the players that did it, they’re the people that really helped me and our staff get the opportunity at Arizona.”

Miller becomes the fourth coach in four seasons at Arizona, following Olson, Kevin O’Neill (now at USC) and interim coach Russ Pennell.

“I don’t know a whole lot about our team at Arizona for obvious reasons,” Miller said. “We have an incoming class that I feel good bout but none of those guys have ever played college basketball.”

That class includes five players: small forward Derrick Williams of La Mirada, Calif.; New York guards Kevin Parrom and Lamont “Momo” Jones (pictured); Los Angeles small forward Solomon Hill; and Bradenton (Fla.) IMG Academy center Kyryl Natyazhko, a native of the Ukraine.

Three of those players — Williams, Jones and Hill — initially committed to Southern Cal, but Jones and Williams changed their minds in the wake of the O.J. Mayo scandal that saw former USC coach Tim Floyd step down.

“Our focus right now is to continue to build our program through recruiting the right people and balancing one class after the next and hopefully adding depth to our team,” Miller said.

Arizona assistant coach Emanuel “Book” Richardson also recruited Brooklyn star Lance Stephenson, but Stephenson ended up choosing Cincinnati.

It appears that Miller was more guarded about recruiting Stephenson, who carried a lot of baggage with his sexual assault case, Internet reality series and highly involved father.

“We’re trying to take a broad scope of being smart,” Miller said. “Sometimes the mistakes that can really haunt you are the ones you make in a rush or right when you first get to a place.

“As best we can and it’s imperfect we’re trying to have a plan for three years, five years to make sure the decisions we make take care of us at that point.”

Richardson gives the ‘Cats entree to the fertile New York/New Jersey recruiting ground, but Miller was quick to emphasize that A) Arizona recruits nationally; and B) Richardson can flat out coach.

“The Arizona brand established through Coach Olson in an unbelievable 25-year run has allowed Arizona to have players from all places in our country,” Miller said

“Khalid Reeves was from New York City, Michael Wright was from Chicago and Jordan Hill is from Atlanta.”

On Richardson as a coach, Miller said:

“Book is an excellent coach. He’s great with people. Just to label him as a recruiter or to specifically give him New York, his relationship goes well beyond that. I think he’s going to be an effective recruiter anywhere in the country and particularly back here because of his strong ties. But he’s also a very good basketball coach and there’s nobody better at guiding players as part of Arizona.

“He has a gift in really being able to make them feel comfortable and helping them and guiding them.”

Arizona lost Chase Budinger and Hill to the NBA, but returns senior point guard Nic Wise, who made himself eligible for the NBA Draft on April 16 but did not hire an agent. Wise averaged 15.7 points, 2.5 rebounds and 4.6 assists per game in 35 appearances this past season.

“Nic Wise is the most established player that we have and I think he’ll be one of the better point guards in our conference,” Miller said.

Jones, out of Oak Hill (Va.) Academy, is skilled enough to spell Wise at the point or share the backcourt with him.

“He’s physically mature enough right now as a freshman to have an impact as a freshman,” Oak Hill coach Steve Smith said. “I think he fits in with their plans. If they want him to score he can do that because he shoots it so well. If they want him to run their team, he can do that, too.”

Arizona also returns 6-6 junior forward Jamelle Horne, who averaged 6.8 points and 5.1 rebounds.

“You have several players that just haven’t had the opportunity to play but any one of them could blossom,” Miller said. “There’s just a lot of newness, a lot of unknowns. All of them are going to have to adjust to a new coach and new staff.”

A source close to the New England Playaz club said the Hoyas had not offered McCrea, who visited campus unofficially last week.

VETRONE WANTS TO NAME FDU COURT AFTER GREEN

NEPTUNE, N.J. — It isn’t often that a basketball coach wants to dedicate his school’s court to the guy he replaced.

But that’s exactly what’s going on at Fairleigh Dickinson University in New Jersey.

Greg Vetrone, who replaced fired coach Tom Green (pictured), wants to name the court at the Rothman Center after his predecessor.

“My goal one day, my dream is to play on Tom Green Court one day,” Vetrone said last week at the Reebok Summer Classic. “I wish they would name the court after him. The guy’s the winningest coach in the history of the school and he’s the winningest coach in NEC history. They should name the court after him.”

Under Green, Fairleigh Dickinson failed to make the Northeast Conference tournament for the second consecutive season in 2008-09, finishing with a 7-23 record. Green’s career mark was 407-351.

He was fired in June after 26 seasons on the job — and he wasn’t happy about it.

“I’ve been a coaching ambassador for this university for 26 years. I don’t call this place work, I call it home,” Green told The Record of Hackensack (N.J.). “Firing me right now shows a total lack of respect for me as a person, as a coach and as a loyal employee over the last 26 years.”

Vetrone, who has known Green for 26 years but had been on his staff just one year as an assistant in his second go-round with the program, was hired on an interim basis.

Asked what Green was up to now, Vetrone said he didn’t know. Presumably he’s looking for work.

“This decision kills my career. To get fired in June of year 26 kills a career. I’d hoped to coach another five or six years before I even thought about retiring,” Green told The Record. “It not only affects me, but I’ve got three assistant coaches and two of them have families. There are no Division I college basketball head coaching jobs available in June.”

Vetrone said the transition to head coach hasn’t been easy because of his friendship with Green.

“It’s tough because coach Green and I are such great friends,” Vetrone said. “I worked for him 1988. I came back last year, so I love the University. It’s my second time there.

“I love Tom Green. It’s been difficult. Hopefully, in time he’ll get back with the administration.”

He chose the Cowboys over Maryland, Cincinnati and Memphis.

“I just feel like I jelled with the team and [Travis Ford] seems like a real focused coach,” Pilgrim told the Stillwater News Press. “I really like the style of basketball he plays and I’m just the kind of player he wants. I’m a guy that’s going to give 100 percent and play hard no matter what position I play.”

RENCHER TO TEXAS STATE

“Terrence is a great addition to our new staff,” Davalos said. “He is a very driven person who has come highly recommended by people I know and respect in this business.”

Rencher comes to Texas State after serving as a graduate assistant coach at Saint Louis under Rick Majerus in 2008-09. He also was the head coach and basketball program director for the boy’s varsity team at Regents School of Austin in 2007-08. In addition to his coaching duties, Rencher served as an academic mentor for the University of Texas men’s basketball team from 2006-08.

GRADY TO MOREHEAD STATE

Matt Grady, a Springfield, N.J. native, has been named Assistant Men’s Basketball Coach at Morehead State. Head coach Donnie Tyndall announced Grady’s appointment this week. Grady comes to Morehead State with experience at the University of Louisville on two occasions, the University of Cincinnati, New Mexico State, Murray State, and St. Joseph’s.

“I am really excited to join Coach Tyndall and the Morehead State basketball program and university. I look forward to working for Coach Tyndall and along with his staff to help them continue their great success. I want to thank him, and I know we’ll have a lot of fun,” said Grady. “Also I really appreciate everything Coach (Rick) Pitino and Coach (Mick) Cronin did for me and all the opportunities that they have afforded me. I cannot thank them enough for all I have learned.”

“One thing we did pretty well was shoot the ball and we made some extra passes, made good decisions,” USA and Pitt coach Jamie Dixon said. “We know we’ve got to get better as this tournament continues so this is the first one and hopefully we’ve got something to build on.”

Notre Dame associate head coach Sean Kearney got the nod as the new Holy Cross head coach, according to a report by FoxSports.com.
Kearney, 49, has been an assistant to head coach Mike Brey at Notre Dame for nine years. A press conference is expected Friday.

Miller landed a verbal commitment Sunday from Derrick Williams, a 6-foot-7 forward from La Mirada, Calif., who initially committed to USC.

“Yeah I did,” Williams wrote by text.

Williams visited Arizona late last week and ultimately chose the Wildcats over Arizona State, Gonzaga and Memphis. He had visited Memphis earlier in the week.

Williams is one of eight recruits to leave USC. Head coach Tim Floyd resigned in the wake of the O.J. Mayo scandal.

The Williams signing would appear to take Arizona firmly out of the Lance Stephenson mix. Stephenson, as first reported on ZAGSBLOG, could be headed to Cincinnati.

Williams joins a five-man recruiting class at Arizona that includes New York guards Kevin Parrom and Lamont “Momo” Jones; Los Angeles small forward Solomon Hill; and Bradenton (Fla.) IMG Academy center Kyryl Natyazhko.

Like Williams, Jones and Hill also initially committed to Southern Cal.

HOLY CROSS DOWN TO 2

Holy Cross is down to two candidates for its head coaching job, according to FoxSports.com.

Either Notre Dame associate head coach Sean Kearney or Pittsburgh associate head coach Tom Herrion will get the job vacated by Ralph Willard, according to the report.

Kearney will interview with Holy Cross AD Richard Regan on Monday and Herrion on Tuesday, and Regan could decide by Wednesday.

Lonergan, 43, was the America East Coach of the Year in 2007 after guiding the Catamounts to a 25-8 record and an appearance in the NIT.

Last year he lead Vermont to a 24-9 overall record, a share of the America East regular season championship and only their second-ever postseason victory in school history. Vermont knocked off Wisconsin-Green Bay in the first round of the College Basketball Invitational before losing on the road in overtime to the eventual CBI champion Oregon State in the next round.

Willard left Holy Cross to join Rick Pitino’s staff at Louisville.

Lonergan was previously an assistant at Colgate and under Gary Williams at Maryland.

He has family connections to Holy Cross because his father, Jack, was a left-handed pitcher at who hurled on the Crusaders’ 1952 NCAA College World Series championship team.

Other coaches in the mix are Notre Dame assistant Sean Kearney; former Boston University coach Dennis Wolf; Kansas assistant Joe Dooley; and possibly Cornell coach Steve Donahue.

WILLIAMS VISITING MEMPHIS

Derrick Williams, the 6-7, 210-pound forward who got his release from USC, will visit Memphis Sunday night, per Dan Wolken of the Memphis Commercial Appeal.

“I’m coming (Sunday) night,” wrote Williams, an ex-USC signee, who will travel from his home in La Mirada, Calif., for an official visit to the Memphis campus.

Williams has three more official visits remaining.

“I’m going to see how it goes,” Williams said. “I might take two, possibly three. It depends on how good the visits go.”

He won’t meet with Memphis head coach Josh Pastner until Monday morning, when the 48-hour clock kicks in.

“He just sounds really enthusiastic and sounds like he knows what he’s doing,” Williams said of Pastner. “He’s a young coach, and that’s what I like. He wants me to come in and be an impact player.”

FATHER’S DAY

Here’s a nice Father’s Day piece on Kyrie and Drederick Irving from my esteemed colleague, Kevin Armstrong of SI.com.

But apparently he’s good enough for USC.

O’Neill, who was the interim coach at Arizona two seasons ago and has 13 years of experience as a college and NBA coach, was named Tim Floyd’s successor at Southern Cal on Saturday.

Pittsburgh coach Jamie Dixon and UNLV coach Lon Kruger both reportedly turned the job down.

“We’re thrilled to have Kevin O’Neill as our men’s basketball coach,” USC AD Mike Garrett said in a statement. “Kevin is the consummate coach. He knows his Xs and Os, he’s an excellent recruiter and he is very in tune with the academic side of a player’s collegiate experience. His 30 years of experience at the college and professional levels has prepared him well for this opportunity. I love his coaching philosophy and principles: he’s a no-nonsense coach who is very detail-oriented and prepares his teams well. He stresses defense and I’ve always believed that defense wins championships.”

O’Neill, 52, takes over for Floyd, who resigned after four seasons on June 9 amidst the O.J. Mayo scandal. Floyd allegedly paid Mayo associate Rodney Guillory $1,000 in cash to help steer Mayo to the program. Mayo is now in the NBA.

If those allegations are proven true by the NCAA, USC could forfeit victories, face recruiting restrictions and lose scholarships.

Still, O’Neill fully understands the situation.

“I’m very excited about this opportunity to coach at such a great institution as USC, with its tremendous athletic and academic tradition,” O’Neill said. “I appreciate Mike Garrett’s confidence in me. I will work my hardest to coach us to a championship level every single day. I can’t wait to get started.”

O’Neill faces a major rebuilding effort at USC, which has lost eight recruits and four of their best returning players – Demar DeRozan, Taj Gibson, Daniell Hackett and Marcus Johnson – since the end of the season.

O’Neill, 52, has worked in the basketball coaching ranks for 30 years, most recently spending the 2009 season as an assistant coach and special assistant to the general manager of the NBA’s Memphis Grizzlies.

He was the head coach at Marquette (1990-94), Tennessee (95-97) and Northwestern (98-00) — where his total career record is under .500 — before becoming an assistant with the Knicks (02-03) and the Detroit Pistons.

He served as the Toronto Raptors’ head coach in 2004, going 33-49.

He spent the next three years (2005-07) with the Indiana Pacers, the first two as an assistant.

O’Neill was named interim head coach at Arizona for the 2008 season when Lute Olson took a leave of absence. His Wildcats went 19-15 and made the NCAA tourney, yet some players were unhappy with his style.

“He’s a great guy off the court, but he’s bipolar or something,” one of his former players told FoxSports.com. “On the court, he’s a madman.”
