Immediately.

With his program in the midst of a national scandal after one player, Emanuel “Tiki” Mayben, was caught distributing crack cocaine and five other players were dismissed from the program, the Binghamton coach has gone and gotten himself in trouble.

Again.

Jeff Goodman of Foxsports.com appears to have caught Broadus red-handed speaking with two recruits from Notre Dame Prep in Fitchburg, Mass., a day after the contact period ended.

Notre Dame players Michael Glenn and Antoine Myers told Goodman that Broadus spoke to both of them at the school on Tuesday, the first day of the evaluation period.

“I couldn’t believe it,” one assistant coach in attendance told Goodman. “He [Broadus] was leaving and he took the two kids down the hallway up the stairs. They came out and both kids had business cards in their hands. I was shocked.”

Goodman’s story quotes both kids saying Broadus spoke to them.

The coach initially denied it, but the school later announced it was self-reporting an NCAA violation.

The schools interim AD, James Norris, issued the following statement.

“Today, Coach Broadus brought a potential NCAA infraction to my attention. The coach reported contact with prospective student-athletes that was then determined to constitute a level one secondary violation of NCAA regulations. A self-report of the violation was immediately submitted to the NCAA.

“We immediately placed corrective actions on the coach and his staff. The campus is reviewing the facts to determine if additional actions are necessary.

“The campus also provided copies of the NCAA self-report to Chancellor (Nancy) Zimpher and Judge Kaye.”

Now, if you were Kevin Broadus, wouldn’t you be on your very best behavior given what has recently transpired?

Wouldn’t you be observing every rule in the NCAA rulebook and running everything past your athletic director?

Or, would you be out talking to recruits in full view of other Division 1 coaches a day after the contact period ended?

Binghamton athletic director Dr. Joel Thirer resigned Oct. 1 after Mayben and five other players, including former Rutgers guard Corey Chandler, were dismissed from the team.

Yet university president Lois B. DeFleur and Zimpher opted to let Broadus keep his job.

Yes, the same Kevin Broadus who has a history of recruiting players from a Philadelphia diploma mill to Georgetown…and then to Binghamton.

And the same Kevin Broadus who allowed his players to run wild by distributing crack; stealing condoms from a Wal-Mart and then beating up a 66-year old woman; and beating another Binghamton student into a coma in a bar fight.

How many more chances does this guy get?

St. Patrick coach Kevin Boyle and he provided the latest news on his star players, Kyrie Irving and Michael Gilchrist.

The 6-foot-2 Irving loved his visit to Duke this past weekend but still plans to take his next scheduled official visit to Texas A&M Oct. 9. After that, Irving is slated to visit Kentucky, Georgia Tech and Seton Hall.

“He’s going to Texas A&M Oct. 9 for sure. After that we’ll take it one-by-one,” Boyle said.

Multiple reports surfaced that Irving is close to committing to Duke and although that may well happen, he apparently hasn’t done so yet.

“Duke official was great! I enjoyed every single second…everything there fits me and is right for me…you never know what will happen,” Irving Tweeted after the visit.

GILCHRIST TO VISIT VILLANOVA

As for the 6-7 Gilchrist, the No. 1 prospect in the Class of 2011, Boyle said Gilchrist was planning on visiting Villanova.

“I think he’s going to try to get out to Villanova this wekeend,” Boyle said.

Sources confirmed that Gilchrist will visit this weekend.

“It’s close to his house [in South Jersey] and he wants to get a feeling for how Villanova stands,” Boyle added.

Cindy Richardson, Gilchrist’s mother, previously said that her son talks about Kentucky and Villanova all the time, and Gilchrist told reporters at the LeBron James Academy this summer that those two schools were his top choices.

William Wesley, aka Worldwide Wes, is a John Calipari confidante who grew up across the street in Camden, N.J. from Richardson and remains a close family friend.

As for the Villanova connection, Villanova coach Jay Wright and Richardson have a strong relationship.

Still, Cindy told SI.com that those relationships don’t necessarily mean her son will play for either one of the Wildcats.

“There are no dots,” she told SI.com. “Wes’ relationship with John Calipari, that’s their relationship. Our relationship with coach Calipari is going to be the same relationship we want to extend to every other college coach. The difference is, coach Cal does his job. Coach Cal is actively recruiting Michael, but we want Michael to experience the same thing every other high school athlete has experienced. He has not decided on where he’s going to go.”

Meanwhile, Gilchrist is making a concerted effort to visit other schools.

He spent two days at Rutgers two weekends ago and then took an unofficial to Michigan this past weekend.

“He had an unofficial to Michigan,” Boyle said. “I know he had a good time and enjoyed it very much and got to see them workout. I know he’s impresed with Coach [John] Beilein’s ability. He’s one of the better coaching teachers in college basketball. Mike enjoyed getting to watch them in practice. At this point he’s excited going there.”

DANIELS TO WAGNER

Josh Daniels, a 6-6, 180-pound SF out of St. Patrick, has committed to Wagner. Daniels helped St. Patrick go 30-3 and win last year’s New Jersey’s Tournament of Champions.

“We’re just excited for Josh,” Boyle said. “We think Coach [Mike Deane] is an excellent coach. It’s a great fit for Josh. It’s a program that’s up and coming. He could definitely be a contributor early in his career, so we’re happy for him.”

SMITH SETS OFFICIALS

Roscoe Smith, the No. 6 small forward in the Class of 2010 out of Oak Hill (Va.) Academy, has set his official visits. The 6-foot-7, 185-pound Smith will take five visits beginning with Georgetown this weekend.

Just a few weeks after he was dismissed from Rutgers, Chandler and four other Binghamton players were booted out of that school.

D.J. Rivera, Malik Alvin, Paul Crosby and David Fine were the other players released. The school’s Website shows the players already removed from the roster.

The Bearcats won the America East last year and made the NCAA Tournament.

“It’s important that everyone who is playing for Binghamton University and for me to be on the same page as to what kind of commitment we expect of our student-athletes, both on and off the court,” Binghamton coach Kevin Broadus said in a statement.

“There’s only one captain steering this ship, and that’s me. If any of the young men in our program don’t respect the decisions that have been made or the rules we have in place, then they need to move on with their lives,” Broadus said.

“We’ll play with the student-athletes that want to be here, have respect for the institution, the game and the opportunities that we have provided for them,” the coach said.

Sean Tainsh, spokesman for the America East Conference, had no comment when reached by phone.

A message left for Patrick Nero, the America East Commissioner, was not immediately returned.

“At what price glory?” Tom Brennan, the former Vermont coach, asked The New York Times. “Not only have they embarrassed themselves and the university, but they’ve embarrassed the America East as well.”

On Wednesday Binghamton player Tiki Mayben was arrested and charged with two counts of criminal sale of a controlled substance (crack cocaine), third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance and fifth degree criminal posession of a controlled substance, all felonies.

Mayben was arrested earlier this month for possession of marijuana, according to The Binghamton Press & Sun-Bulletin.

Carl Hayden, an Elmira lawyer who is chairman of the SUNY Board of Trustees, said he wasn’t happy.

“I’m not pleased to read about this incident, particularly against the backdrop of prior incidents. I view the situation seriously,” he told the Press & Sun-Bulletin. “Binghamton is one of the crown jewels of the SUNY system, and I don’t want to see its standards in any way compromised.”

Nancy Zimpher, the new SUNY chancellor, has a reputation for taking a hard line on coaches. She helped get rid of Bob Huggins during her time at Cincinnati.

“In light of the most recent incident and other previous incidents related to the men’s basketball team,” Zimpher said in a statement, “I have requested President DeFleur to report on the immediate steps the campus is taking to address these serious issues.”
