Rivers Drops 46 to Surpass 2,000; Boatright Has 55

Duke-bound guard Austin Rivers dropped 46 points in his season opener as Winter Park (Fla.) downed Monteverde, 102-92, on Friday.

The 6-foot-3 Rivers, who chose Duke after decommitting from Florida, also surpassed the 2,000-point plateau. He entered the game with 1,981 career points.

“I actually didn’t know that coming in,” Rivers told the Orlando Sentinel. “We were concentrated on winning this game and starting out with a bang … But there have been a lot of great players to play at Winter Park, so it means a lot.” (more…)

Miller, Bello Talk Recruiting Plans

Quincy Miller and Deuce Bello are back from their weekend trip to Baylor and have more visits planned.

The 6-foot-9 1/2, 190-pound Miller, the No. 1 power forward in the Class of 2011, now has a top four schools.

“I narrowed it down to four — Baylor, Duke, Louisville and Oklahoma,” Miller said Wednesday by phone.

Asked if he had any favorites, Miller replied: “Baylor and Louisville are slightly in the lead and Duke is right behind and then Oklahoma.” (more…)

First 12 Boost Mobile Invites Announced; College Tourney Brackets Announced

ESPN RISE announced the first 12 players selected to participate in the fifth annual Boost Mobile Elite 24 event. The game will be hosted at Los Angeles’ Venice Beach Friday and Saturday, August 27 and 28.

After Rutgers, Rosario Gearing up for Gators

NORTH AUGUSTA, S.C. Mike Rosario watched Bradley Beal and Austin Rivers battle it out in the AAU Super Showcase championship game from Orlando, Fla. Tuesday night on ESPNU.

While the 6-foot-4 Beal has verbally committed to join Rosario at Florida in 2011, the 6-4 Rivers is considering Duke, Florida, North Carolina, Kansas and Kentucky. Many expect him to land at Duke.

With Florida coach Billy Donovan among those watching courtside, Rivers scored a game-high 24 points as his Each 1 Teach 1 team beat Beal’s St. Louis Eagles, 78-60, for the title.

“I watched them go to head-to-head,” Rosario said by phone from the Florida campus. “It was a great matchup. Those guys been playing well. I love Brad Beal’s game. He has a smooth game like Ray Allen.

Rivers Wins Showcase, Gets Boost Mobile Invite

Austin Rivers and Bradley Beal are the first two players who have been invited to this year’s Boost Mobile Elite 24 game Aug. 28 in Venice Beach, Calif., a source with knowledge told ZAGSBLOG.

The 6-foot-4 Rivers and Each 1 Teach 1 beat the 6-4 Beal and the St. Louis Eagles, 78-60, Tuesday night on ESPNU for the Orlando Super Showcase title in front of a crowd that included Billy Donovan of Florida, Roy Williams of North Carolina, former Duke star Grant Hill, Brad Stevens of Butler, Bruce Pearl of Tennessee, Anthony Grant of Alabama and Mike Anderson of Missouri.

Rivers and teammate Trevor Lacey combined for 46 points, with Rivers dropping a game-high 24 and Lacey scoring 22.

“They beat us at Boo Williams at our first tournament,” Lacey told ESPNU. “We kind of wanted a little payback. It was good for us to come out and win the game.”

Rivers said after the game he is considering Duke, North Carolina, Florida, Kansas and Kentucky. (more…)

Rivers, Beal Lead Teams into Showcase Finals

Austin Rivers and Bradley Beal, two of the brightest stars in the Class of 2011, put their teams on their respective backs Monday and will square off Tuesday for the Super Showcase championship in Orlando, Fla.

The 6-foot-4 Rivers scored 17 of his game-high 37 points to lead Each 1 Teach 1 to a come-from-behind 76-67 victory over the Georgia Blazers in the second semifinal.

In the first one, the Florida-bound Beal dropped 36 points as the St. Louis Eagles exacted revenge on Team Takeover with an 80-76 win. Team Takeover beat E1T1 to win the Peach Jam July 15.

The title game is set for 7 p.m. Tuesday on ESPNU. (more…)

Gilchrist Will Miss Rivers Matchup Monday

Michael Gilchrist will not play in Monday’s nationally televised game against Austin Rivers‘ team on ESPNU.

“Absolutely not,” his mother, Cindy Richardson, said Sunday.

Gilchrist played his last AAU event this summer at the Peach Jam.

“Given the fact that he won’t have a summer next year, we thought it would be good if he just vacations for five weeks,” Richardson said.

Gilchrist’s Team Final is slated to go head-to-head with Rivers’ Each 1 Teach 1 team Monday at 7 p.m. in the Super Showcase in Orlando. (more…)

After Loss, Rivers Plans to Call Trio of Coaches; Peach Jam Stats Leaderboard

NORTH AUGUSTA, S.C. — There wasn’t a seat to be found during tipoff of Austin Rivers‘ game against the Boo Williams AAU team Tuesday night at the Peach Jam.

Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski, North Carolina coach Roy Williams and Florida coach Billy Donovan secured prominent seats early along coaches’ row so Rivers could see them.

Celtics coach Doc Rivers, Austin’s father, sat against another wall.

Dozens of other prominent coaches ringed the court. The stands were packed. And even the track above the court was thick with people anxious to watch the 6-foot-4 uncommitted rising senior guard.

“Yeah, I saw them,” said Rivers, averaging 24.5 points, including 17 of 43 3-pointers, through four games here. (more…)

Rivers: Celtics Still Team to Beat in East

NORTH AUGUSTA, S.C. — The Miami Heat added LeBron James and Chris Bosh.

The Knicks brought on Amar’e Stoudemire and Raymond Felton.

The Orlando Magic still have Dwight Howard and Vince Carter.

And the Boston Celtics will be without Kendrick Perkins for half of next season and Rasheed Wallace forever.

But Celtics coach Doc Rivers says they are still the team to beat in the East. (more…)

Doc Rivers Says Son Hasn’t Decided

NORTH AUGUSTA, S.C. — There was a star-studded crowd on hand Monday night to watch Austin Rivers and his Each 1 Teach 1 team at the Peach Jam.

Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski and assistant Chris Collins sat in the middle of the packed coaches’ row, while Boston Celtics coach Doc Rivers, Austin’s father, sat against another wall.

In the end, though, Syracuse commit Michael Carter-Williams and the Boston Area Basketball Club (BABC) spoiled the party by handing Rivers’ team a 63-51 defeat in front of a charged crowd.

Carter-Williams, who dropped 44 points earlier in the day, put up 18 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists to go with 7 turnovers. (more…)
