Jared Butler, the 6-foot-2 point guard from Riverside (LA) Academy, announced his commitment to Alabama on Monday via Twitter.

“I’m headed to the University of Alabama, and I picked them because I talk to God a lot and my family a lot, and we’ve spent months and days talking, and it seemed like the best situation and the best people,” Butler told Scout. “I love them a lot, and they love me.”

Butler chose the Tide over his final six of Texas, Wichita State, USC, Baylor, and Virginia.

Butler is the first commit of the 2018 class for Avery Johnson and is the fourth recruit rated four-stars or higher in the last two recruiting classes.

Playing with MEBO Elite on the Nike EYBL this past summer, Butler averaged 13.6 points, 4.0 rebounds, 4.4 assists, and 1.0 steals in 16 games played.

“They play a lot of ball screens, and one of my best attributes is playing off a ball screen,” Butler told Scout. Coach Avery was a point guard, and he can teach me a lot of things. They like to play fast, and I feel like I can play fast in certain situations, but I can slow it down a lot too. That’s going to fit in really well with what they are trying to do.”

According to 247Sports, Butler is ranked as the No. 89 overall player in the Class of 2018 and the No. 3 player from the state of Louisiana.
