  • Keldon Johnson visits Maryland, decision expected by November

Keldon Johnson, the 6-foot-6, 215-pound small forward from Oak Hill Academy (VA), took his final official visit to Maryland this weekend and hopes to make a decision by November.

He’s considering four schools: Kentucky, Maryland, N.C. State and Texas.

“We enjoyed ourselves as a family,” his father Chris said Sunday evening. “We got to see a lot of stuff we didn’t know they had, technology. They had the strength and conditioning coach, so it was good, really good.”

Asked what his role there would be, Chris said, “From Day One, it would be his team. They would put the ball in his hands and let him go out and make plays. He has to be in shape and be ready for that. The opportunity will be there for him to do what he needs to do.”

Johnson spent time with IMG Academy (FL) combo guard Eric Ayala and Providence Day School (N.C.) point guard Devon Dotson.

“Yes, all the families hung out,” Chris said. “We really had a great time. [Aaron] Wiggins came back and Jalen Smith came back so all the kids got to hang out and laugh and enjoy it and be together.”

Maryland “is probably three hours” from Chris’ home, “and we already have one son up there at Georgetown in Kaleb, so it could work out.”

Now Keldon’s done with visits and will focus on the four schools on his list.

“No more visits, now it’s decision time,” Chris said. “We gonna go and try to make a decision before November comes in. We’re looking at trying to get it done for November.”

Meantime, Oak Hill coach Steve Smith says Johnson is a future pro.

“He’s got great size, he’s a wing player, he’s about 6-6, 6-7, good body, weighs about 215 right now,” Smith said. “We’re trying to get him down to about 205. We’re working with him on that. He’s an NBA prospect. he’s that kind of player. He’s very skilled, he’s a great passer. He’s long, he defends, he rebounds. He’s a great offensive rebounder and then he can score the ball as well as any wing in the country so he’s got a great upside. I’ll be shocked if he doesn’t play for money one day.”
