James Akinjo to UConn

James Akinjo, the 6-foot point guard from Richmond (CA) Salesian and the Oakland Soldiers AAU program, committed to UConn on Monday following his only official visit to campus.

“I’m going to UConn,” Akinjo told Scout.com. “I have a great relationship with coach (Kevin) Ollie and it’s the best fit for me. I think I can perform at a high level there.”

Ranked the No. 18 point guard in the Class of 2018, Akinjo believes he will do well at his future home.

“I fit in well there,” he told Scout. “I’m a guard who can get up and down the floor and pressure the ball well. I expect to come in, play early and win a lot of games.”

Playing with the Oakland Soldiers on the Nike EYBL circuit this summer, Akinjo helped lead his team to a Peach Jam Title, scoring 17 points and 5 assists in the title game.

UConn remains involved for New Jersey guard Jalen Carey, who they are recruiting as more of a combo guard. Carey is focusing on UConn, Syracuse and Miami at this stage, and has home visits with all three this week.
