  • Sneaker Wars take a break as Nike, Under Armour not directly competing in August

NEW YORK — The sneaker wars are taking a break this summer.

Under Armour and Nike won’t go head-to-head with their events in August because each sneaker company is holding a showcase event on a different weekend next month.

For the last couple of years, Nike has held an event in the Bahamas that competed directly with the Under Armour Elite 24 Game in late August, the idea being to draw attention from the Elite 24.

Under Armour is shifting its Elite 24 Game to the San Francisco Bay area and will fold it into the Steph Curry SC30 Select camp Aug. 6-8, sources told ZAGSBLOG. The game will be shown on ESPNU on Aug. 8 at 9 p.m..

The event advertises “the top 24 high school basketball players in the world,” and is expected to draw some of Under Armour’s top players, including New York/New Jersey area standouts Moses Brown, Naz Reid, Jahvon Quinerly, Bryan Antoine and Scottie Lewis.

Last year the Elite 24 Game was held Aug. 20 in Brooklyn, where New York native Isaiah Washington (Minnesota) took home MVP honors. The event has also been held in Los Angeles and Charlotte.

Meantime, adidias will also hold its Adidas Nations event Aug. 4-8 in Houston.

Nike will hold an event called “The Academy” in Thousand Oaks, Calif., Aug. 19 that it advertised on ESPN’s coverage of the Peach Jam final on Sunday. The event purportedly will feature 18 of the top 20 players in the nation.

The crown jewel of the Nike summer circuit, the Peach Jam in North Augusta, S.C., completed Sunday with the Oakland Soldiers beating Team Takeover in the final.

Meantime, sources said the Big Strick Classic that has been held in New York the last several years with high-profile players is not slated to go in 2017.
