  • Former UConn Signee Makai Ashton-Langford Reopens Recruitment

GLENDALE, Ariz. –Makai Ashton-Langford is back on the open market after obtaining his release from UConn.

The 6-foot-2 Brewster Academy point guard chose UConn over Providence back in September.

“I would like to thank the University of Connecticut for the opportunity, but due to recent turn of events I have been granted my release and will reopen my recruitment without limitations and will discuss my decision over with my family,” Ashton-Langford tweeted.

UConn has already seemingly moved on and is among five schools in the mix for former Washington commit Blake Harris, who will visit UConn April 18-19. Harris is also mulling N.C. State, Missouri, Michigan State and Rutgers.

The Ashton-Langford development is the latest in a tumultuous offseason at UConn. Steven Enoch and Vance Jackson are both transferring, and Raphael Chillious replaced Glen Miller on Kevin Ollie’s staff.

“Glen Miller leaving made Makai take another look at the opportunity to be a starter at other places and have the all in his hand right away,” said Mass Rivals coach Vin Pastore.

He added: “Makai hasn’t thought about where he might go. I’m expecting he’ll have a lot of choices. He’s definitely looking for a place where he’ll play significant minutes right away.”

UConn now has two players signed for 2017 in forward Tyler Polley and big man Josh Carlton, with four scholarships remaining. The Huskies are also reportedly in the mix for former Washington commit Mamadou Diarra, a 6-9 forward from 22 Feet Academy.
