UMass fired head coach Derek Kellogg following the team’s loss to St. Bonaventure in the Atlantic 10 Tournament on Thursday.

    ESPN first reported the news.

“Decisions like this are always difficult but after a thorough review of our men’s basketball program, I believe that a leadership change is needed to realize a higher level of competitive success expected at the University of Massachusetts,” UMass AD Ryan Bamford said.

The Minutemen went 15-18, 4-14 in the A-10 this season.

UMass suffered back-to-back losing seasons and went 46-51 in the last three years after making the NCAA Tournament in 2013-14.

Kellogg, who played point guard for John Calipari from 1991-95 during UMass’s ascendance on the national stage, went 155-136 in his nine years at UMass.

“I want to thank Derek for his unwavering commitment to UMass basketball as both a student-athlete and our head coach,” Bamford said. “Derek will always be a Minuteman and we wish him and his family well in the future.”

UMass has hired Folger Consulting to assist in a “national coaching search.”

Several potential candidates include Iona’s Tim Cluess, Florida Gulf Coast’s Joe Dooley, Monmouth’s King Rice and UNC-Wilmington’s Kevin Keatts.
