Marcus Carr, a 6-foot-2 Canadian point guard from Montverde (FL) Academy, verbally committed to Pittsburgh on Wednesday.

Carr also considered Cincinnati, Clemson and Virginia Tech.
“At the end of the day, the coaching staff from Pittsburgh they were formerly of Vanderbilt and they were tracking him for three years,” Northern Kings coach Vidal Massiah said by phone. “I know loyalty is a big thing to him, knowing that the people who have his back truly have his back so I think it just came down to a long-term relationship, being comfortable, knowing the coaches, knowing they’ve seen you in a number of different scenarios.
“They stuck with him through the injury when he tore his ACL last year, they tracked him at Montverde, so they really understand him and they’ve seen him.”
He is part of a young wave of Canadian talent at Montverde that also includes sophomores Andrew Nembhard and R.J. Barrett.
Carr joins point guard Aaron Thompson and power forward Terrell Brown in Pitt’s 2017 class.
“He’s a very dynamic point guard and I think he was on track to be a top-50 player in the 2017 class before he got hurt,” Massiah said. “He’s worked himself back into great form and I think he brings a great deal of leadership, score when he’s off the ball, can run the team, be a coach on the floor. I think he brings tremendous on-ball pressure on the defensive end, and he’s a very good leader.”
Added Montverde coach Kevin Boyle: “Marcus is a tenacious defensive player and a great leader. He is as good a ball-handler and penetrator a guard as there is in the country. Pittsburgh is getting a college-ready guard. We’re looking for him to carry a big load for us this season.”
