  • 4_2971152Wendell Carter Jr. had a big day for himself on Tuesday.

The 6-foot-10 2017 power forward from Atlanta (GA) Pace Academy made the USA U16 National Team and picked up an offer from Kentucky.

Carter Jr. also made the U16 team that will compete in the FIBA Americas U16 Championship this month in Argentina

CGlliIhU8AA_BoQNovak Djokovic is now two victories from the career Grand Slam and becoming the new king of the French Open.

In dispatching nine-time Roland Garros winner and No. 6 seed Rafael Nadal, 7-6, 6-3, 6-1 in the quarterfinals on Wednesday, No. 1 Djokovic snapped Nadal’s 39-match winning streak on the red clay in Paris.

Nadal entered the match with a record of 93-1 in five-set matches on clay and 70-1 at Roland Garros, with his only loss coming in the fourth round in 2009 to Sweden’s Robin Soderling.

“It’s not a big surprise, no?” Nadal said, according to Christopher Clarey of the New York Times. “I didn’t win enough before here. It’s something that could happen.”

WEST ORANGE, N.J. Jared Nickens knows Maryland is loaded with talent for the 2015-16 season and he and his teammates have lofty goals as a result.

“We want to go to the Final Four and win a national championship,” the 6-foot-7 wing from Monmouth Junction, N.J., told SNY.tv on Saturday at the Mary Kline Classic.

Asked if he was guaranteeing a Final Four appearance, Nickens said, “We’re going to make it a guarantee.”

The Terps will be the preseason No. 1 team in many polls and rightfully so. They return virtually everyone from a 28-7 team that finished 15-4 in the Big Ten and reached the third round of the NCAA Tournament before losing to West Virginia.

Metropolitan area natives Tyus Battle, Isaiah Briscoe and Eric Paschall were among 24 players named Tuesday afternoon to USA Basketball’s 24-member U19 World Championship Team training camp roster.

Training camp will run in Colorado Springs from June 13-20. The 24 participants will be pared down to 12 before the team leaves for Athens on June 21. The FIBA U19 World Championships will be held June 27-July 5 in Crete, Greece.

“It should be looked upon as a tremendous honor to be selected to tryout for this team, because the competition is so strong,” Syracuse head coach and USA Basketball Junior National Team Committee Chair Jim Boeheim said in a statement. “Our committee does a great job identifying players who will represent our country in international competition. We know that even in the training camp, the competition will be fierce.”
