  • Donovan Mitchell Cuts to 10, Planning Visits (UPDATED)

    Share Zagsblog Share Zagsblog
After a breakout July in which he just added an offer from Kansas, Brewster (N.H.) Academy guard Donovan Mitchell has cut his list to 10 schools and plans to trim to five by the end of August.

Mitchell Tweeted out a list of Providence, Creighton, Florida State, Indiana, Georgetown, Villanova, Louisville, Kansas, Boston College and North Carolina. St. John’s was among those not on the list.

He also has a couple of visits on tap.

The 6-foot-3 Mitchell will visit unofficially Villanova Monday (Aug. 4) and Louisville officially Thursday-Friday (Aug. 7-8).

“[Villanova first] was just how it worked out,” the Greenwich, CT, native said by phone. “There’s no reason I picked them first. It’s two hours away from where I live and I would really to go see them.”

Villanova obviously has produced its share of guards.

“They’re telling me that I would be a main contributor to the team as far as play and leadership and that by sophomore year I they would need me to be a big part at that school by sophomore year,” he said, adding that it is “very appealing” that Villanova has produced so many guards.

The Louisville visit is still being sorted out but is tentatively set for Aug. 7-8.

The Cardinals have made Mitchell a top priority in 2015.

“They just told me that I have the opportunity to play and play a lot, which would be perfect for me, just being able to come into a high level and showcase my talent,” he said. “And the way I carry myself, they really appreciate.”

Louisville coach Rick Pitino has coached his share of New York-area guards and Mitchell is originally from Elmsford, N.Y.

“It’s kind of surreal growing up, you hear about him a bunch and know to have an opportunity to play for him is kind of crazy,” he said.

Mitchell will also take officials to Indiana and Florida State in August, leaving him two more. He remains undecided on those at the moment.

He has recently added offers from Kansas, Louisville, Florida State, Oklahoma, Georgetown, Villanova, Auburn and Wichita State to go with previous ones from Providence, St. John’s, Maryland, UConn and Boston College among others.
