  • Kentucky assistant Kenny Payne checked in on Derrick Jones, the 6-foot-7, 190-pound junior wing from Archbishop Carroll (Pa.), his father told SNY.tv.

“He just pretty much filled me in on what’s going on in their program,” Derrick Jones Sr. said. “Just trying to explain more about the program and not the hype of  Kentucky. Everyone is picking Kentucky as a one-and-done school and everything and he was just breaking down how serious things are there and how they expect   excellence from all their players. Just giving me the whole spiel about the whole thing.

“It seems like a great place, I can’t wait to visit.”

Big EsatThe Big East and Big Ten Conferences on Monday announced the Gavitt TipOff Games to begin in 2015-16.

The series will consist of eight games and could feature several natural regional rivalries, including Georgetown-Maryland, Marquette-Wisconsin, Creighton-Nebraska, Butler-Indiana, DePaul-Illinois and Xavier-Ohio State.

Rutgers, which enters the Big Ten next season, and Seton Hall are already signed to an eight-game series, so it’s unlikely they would meet again in this event.

Pairings have not yet been announced.

    Here’s the release:

Three months after decommitting from Oklahoma State, Austin Grandstaff is off the board again.

The 6-foot-5, 195-pound Team Texas guard pledged to Ohio State Sunday after a weekend official visit.

Grandstaff, ranked No. 39 in the Class of 2015 by 247 Sports, also held offers from Florida, Oklahoma State, Oklahoma, Alabama, Arizona, Georgetown, Virginia, Washington, Iowa State, UNLV, Texas A&M, Xavier, Creighton, Marquette, UMass, Oregon and Western Kentucky.

“Just the relationship I developed with the coaching staff,” Grandstaff told SNY.tv Sunday by phone. “I talk to Coach [Thad] Matta a lot but I really got a feel that they’re a family-oriented coaching staff and I like that.

Alonzo Mourning III, also known as Trey, will follow his father’s footsteps and play at Georgetown.

The 6-foot-9 power forward from Ransom (FL) Everglades committed to the Hoyas on Saturday, according to the Washington Post. He averaged 29 points and 10 rebounds per game last season while leading Ransom to Florida’s Class 4A regional semifinals.

Mourning III also considered Duke and Florida.

“There is a lot of pressure that goes with carrying that name here, but Trey has handled it with incredible dignity and grace,” Claude Grubair, the basketball coach and athletic director at Ransom Everglades, told the Post. “That is how he does everything.”

Elijah Burns is one of the top small forwards in the Northeast in the Class of 2015. He will be contributing periodically to ZAGSBLOG going forward. Here is his second Player Blog.

Since the first weekend of the EYBL has come to an end I will give an update on my recruitment and my trip to Germany. For starters I was not in Sac-town last weekend, I was in Mannheim, Germany representing my country at the Albert Schweitzer games.
