  • Ryan Awaiting Georgetown Offer; Notre Dame Remains Strong

NEW YORK —  Matt Ryan is awaiting an offer from Georgetown after assistant Kevin Broadus watched him last Thursday at Iona Prep.

“Coach Broadus was there. He said when I get on the phone with Coach [John] Thompson [III], he’s going to offer me,” the 6-foot-6, 200-pound junior small forward told SNY.tv after helping New York rout New Jersey, 113-89, in the Sharette Dixon Memorial Classic Saturday night at the Gauchos Gym. “Any day now.”

He added: “I just know they’ve been a great team in the Big East all these years, and obviously a great academic school, a great basketball program, so I’m really interested in them.”

Vanderbilt assistant Yanni Hufnagel also watched Ryan Thursday, and has already offered.

“I was pretty impressed with [Vanderbilt commit] Wade Baldwin [who went for 34 points for New Jersey] out there. He was pretty good,” Ryan said. “And I have a really good relationship with coach Hufnagel because he was recruiting me at Harvard. So I really like him and I’m going to get on the phone with coach [Kevin] Stallings soon.”

Assistants from Virginia and Stanford are due in on Monday. And of course, Duke recently watched him, too.

Meantime, Ryan said he talks to Notre Dame assistant Martin Ingelsby “probably every other day.” The Irish have offered, and Ryan recently took an unofficial there.

“I spoke with coach [Mike] Brey earlier [Saturday] and we’re probably going to talk  [Monday], tell him how the day went,” Ryan said.

“He says I’m automatically going to go to heaven if I go there because my name’s Matt Ryan.”

Ryan said the fact that Notre Dame is now in the ACC is a big draw.

“I think all the best players in the country now are going to want to play in the ACC,” he said. “So that might have a factor.”

In describing Ryan’s game, longtime New York recruiting expert Tom Konchalski calls him a “specialist.”

“He’s an endangered species, he’s a shooter so that puts him at a premium and that’s why people who are interested in him, are interested in him,” he said.

“The facts that Notre Dame, Stanford and Duke look at him is because he can shoot the ball. He’s a kid who’s gotta get stronger and he’s gotta work at getting better playing off the dribble. But he has a very quick release, he has very good elevation on his shot and he puts the ball in the basket.”
