Duquesne-bound power forward Isaiah Watkins has left St. Benedict’s Prep and will spend the spring semester training at home in Toronto before heading to college in the summer.
The news was first reported by Alex Kline of The Recruit Scoop, and means the Gray Bees will seek to win a high school national title without Watkins.
“We wish Isaiah Watkins and his family the best in all of his endeavors,” head coach Mark Taylor said. “His family and Isaiah felt it was best for him to stay in Toronto and prepare for college as he has enough credits and is cleared by the NCAA Clearinghouse. The courses Isaiah would take at St. Benedict’s would not count towards college credits, therefore they felt it more productive to look into options that would give them that benefit. Isaiah will be missed greatly.”
The 6-foot-8 Watkins was one of six St. Benedict’s seniors who signed National Letters of Intent in November. That group included Syracuse-bound point guard Tyler Ennis and Pitt-bound forward Mike Young.
