  • Calipari Expected to Watch Wiggins, Harrison Twins at Marshall County Hoopfest

    Share Zagsblog Share Zagsblog
On the day last month that Aaron and Andrew Harrison verbally committed to Kentucky, head coach John Calipari made a recruiting trip to see Andrew Wiggins.

Now, Calipari is expected to watch both the Harrison twins and Wiggins in the same location this weekend at the Marshall County (Ky.) Hoopfest.

Kentucky commit Derek Willis and 2014 target Cliff Alexander will also be at the event.

Huntington Prep coach Rob Fulford — whose team plays games Friday and Saturday at the event — said he hadn’t spoken to Calipari about his plans but “thinks” the Kentucky coach will make an appearance since all of those players are on the bill.

After playing at Notre Dame tonight in the Big East/SEC Challenge, Kentucky returns home to host Baylor on Saturday afternoon.

“We will have several big name coaches here,” Marshall County AD Jeff Stokes told SNY.tv. “I cannot give their names out because they have asked me not to.”

Stokes said he also expects the McDonald’s All-American committee to be on hand as well.

The 6-foot-8 Wiggins is the No. 1 prospect in the Class of 2013 after reclassifying from 2014.

He is expected to select either Kentucky or Florida State, although he is also considering North Carolina, Kansas and Ohio State. Wiggins will sign in the spring.

Fulford previously said that Wiggins initially questioned how he might fit in at Kentucky after the Harrison twins committed, but that that would not be an issue going forward.

“Kind of an intial reaction was how would his roll fit in with the Harrison twins and James Young but he doesn’t care,” Fulford said previously. “A roster alignment isn’t going to factor where Andrew goes.

“He’s going be the best player wherever he goes.”

On Nov. 18, Calipari and two assistants, Orlando Antigua and Kenny Payne, watched Wiggins play at Scott County High School

He went for 17 points and 11 rebounds as Huntington Prep routed Christian Faith Center Academy (N.C.), 61-44, at Scott County (Ky.) High School.

“It’s an honor that they’re coming out to watch me play and show the love and support,” Wiggins told reporters afterward.

Last Friday, Florida State head coach Leonard Hamilton and associate head coach Stan Jones were in attendance at the Charlotte Hoops Challenge to watch both Wiggins and FSU commit Xavier Rathan-Mayes.

Wiggins scored 18 points as Huntington Prep beat Quality Education (N.C.), 50-42.

Fulford has said Wiggins is looking to visit Florida State sometime early in December.

ZAGSBLOG contributor Chip Miller will be covering the event so check back here later this weekend for updates on the tournament.
