  • Calipari, Hamilton Among Those Watching Wiggins

Kentucky coach John Calipari and Florida State coach Leonard Hamilton are among those watching Andrew Wiggins Saturday at the Caribana Classic  Basketball Camp at the Brampton (Ontario) Soccer Centre.

Those two schools are considered the frontrunners for the 6-foot-7 Wiggins, who may or may not reclassify to 2013 from 2014.

The way these coaches are pursuing the Canadian sensation, it sure seems they think it’s possible he’s headed to 2013.

Among other coaches on hand to watch Wiggins and teammates Tyler Ennis and Xavier Rathan-Mayes are Syracuse assistant Adrian Autry, Texas assistant Rob Lanier, Virginia assistant Ron Sanchez, UCLA assistant Phil Mathews and assistants from Illinois, UNLV and Iowa, among others. Syracuse and Illinois are the favorites for Ennis, who plans to announce his choice in August.

Wiggins was not with Ennis and CIA Bounce this week at the “Live in AC” event in New Jersey because he was home resting up after the Peach Jam.

Bounce lost in the quarterfinals to eventual champ Team Takeover.

“I’m proud of these guys,” CIA Bounce coach Tony McIntyre told SNY.tv Friday. “We fought through. We got to the finals [of Peach Jam], that’s all you can ask. We had a shot to win Peach Jam. We came here, we fought hard with really five guys.

“Guys are just way out of gas. They fought through. I’m proud of them. They had a great, great AAU career and they gotta get back and get back to school in the next week or two.”

Ennis will not head back to St. Benedict’s Prep right away, though, because of obligations with the Canadian Senior Men’s National Team.

“He’s with the Senior Men’s National Team as well so they have workouts in August,” McIntyre said.

Ennis and Wiggins will both be in New York Aug. 11 for the Big Strick Classic, which will also feature the Harrison Twins, Troy Williams, Jabari Bird, Anthony “Cat” Barber,” Chris McCullough and others.
