NEW YORK — The Sterling Gibbs Sweepstakes is getting interesting.

During the same weekend that the 6-foot-1 Gibbs visited Texas with his family, UConn assistant Kevin Ollie reached out to the Gibbs family.

“UConn called me last night for Sterling Gibbs,” New York Panthers coach Gary Charles said  Sunday at the iS8/Nike Spring playoffs. “And obviously with Sterling being at Texas, it’s kind of hard for them to talk to him right now. The family said to me, ‘We have an interest.’

“But they can’t concentrate on that right now. When they come back we’re going to talk some more about it. And I plan to talk to Coach [Jim] Calhoun tonight [Sunday] to get more information.”

UConn has rising sophomore point guard Shabazz Napier in the fold, but he played well as a frosh alongside Kemba Walker as UConn won the NCAA championship.

The Huskies could potentially play Gibbs alongside Napier in a similar alignment, with rising sophomores Jeremy Lamb and Roscoe Smith on the wing.

Gibbs obtained his release from Maryland last week and is considering several options. Charles mentioned Louisville, Notre Dame, Seton Hall, Providence, Xavier and Texas Tech had also expressed interest.

“Right now he has no other visits set,” Charles said.

Meantime, Texas signee Myck Kabongo Tweeted Saturday: “Long Horn Nation Safe To Say @SdotGibbs13 Is Hook’D ?”

Stay tuned for more once Gibbs returns from Texas.

In related Maryland news, new coach Mark Turgeon landed a commitment from 6-1 Fredericksburg Christian junior guard Seth Allen, per The Washington Post. He joins Montrose Christian small forward Justin Anderson in the Maryland’s 2012 recruiting class.
