Selby Set to Visit UConn; Wright Leaves Friars; Stokes Apologizes for Incident

By Adam Zagoria on February 26, 2010, 4:43PM

Josh Selby is set to visit UConn this weekend and attend Sunday’s game against Louisville despite the massive snowstorm blanketing the Northeast.

“Everything is going well and yes everything is on for UConn,” Maeshon Witherspoon, Selby’s mother, told Alex Kline of BoxofMess.com.

The 6-foot-2, 185-pound Selby is down to four schools: Arizona, Kansas, Kentucky and UConn.

He had initially cut the Huskies from his list but now they are back on.

“Actually, we had a relationship with UConn first,” Witherspoon told the Baltimore Sun. “They were on the list. We kind of had some miscommunication, so we talked about it and worked it back out.”

A McDonald’s All-American, Selby is averaging more than 30 points, 7 rebounds and 7 assists for Baltimore (Md.) Lake Clifton.

UConn is also involved with senior guards Brandon Knight, Cory Joseph and Doron Lamb.

WRIGHT LEAVES FRIARS

Kyle Wright, a 6-6, 215-pound junior from Hartford, Conn., is leaving the Providence basketball team, according to the Providence Journal.

Wright was averaging 2.8 points and 1.7 rebounds, while shooting just 36 percent from the floor.

He said his lack of playing time combined with his academic workload motivated him to leave the team. He is pursuing a double major in business management and sociology.

“I was required to take more credits than any other student,” Wright told the Providence Journal. “They accepted 70 credits and it normally takes 116 to graduate. I need 140 credits. It would be possible (to graduate and keep playing basketball), but I was in a position where I had to do everything perfectly. I had to fit everything in perfectly.”

Providence has three players committed for next season and now has an extra scholarship to use.

The Friars are involved with 6-3 point guard Bryon Allen of St. Thomas More; 6-9 forward Kadeem Jack of Manhattan Rice; 6-6 Joel “Air Jamaica” Wright, who previously committed to Fordham; 6-4 shooting guard Trey Ziegler of Michigan Mount Pleasant; and 6-9 power forward Jon Horford of Michigan Grand Ledge.

STOKES APOLOGIZES FOR INCIDENT

Corey Stokes apologized to his Villanova teammates after getting a citation for public urination early Thursday morning.

“It’s embarrassing,” Stokes said, according to Terry Toohey of the Delco Times. “I apologized and I learned from my mistakes.”

Villanova coach Jay Wright said he wasn’t certain whether he would punish the 6-5 junior by not playing him against Syracuse in Saturday’s Big East tilt. It sounds like Stokes will play, but may not start.

“I’m still thinking about it,” Wright said, according to the DelcoTimes. “He’s fine with me and the team. He apologized to the team. It was a simple college student’s mistake. He was not drunk and so with me he’s fine. It’s just a matter of what I think about with the team, but he’s playing and it’s just going to be a matter if we make a little decision. It’s not a major deal to me or the team.”

UofA Blowjob, you helped me see the light. You, Jessie, CATintheAZ, DavidPK, beardown3232, etc. are some of the most knowledgeable fans out there. We know nothing about good basketball in the Midwest. All this time I thought we had a decent program, but I see we are nowhere near your elite level.

Anyone know why Selby missed his official visit to UCONN?

FWI Woody my name UofA BJ is supposed to infere UofA BlowJob because they are that good here unlike in the midwest with all those cows you got.
As far as basketball no one is disputing kansas basketball history we are only pointing out the fact that you are a douchebag thats all.

Woody, I live in Saint Louis and trust me, there is not one good recruit coming out of here anytime soon. I have previously lived in northern Cal, southern Cal, and Tucson and all those places produce more talent than anywhere in the mid-west. The odds of a talent like Harrison Barnes living in Iowa are 1 in a billion. The best recruits in basketball, football, and baseball normally come out of either the west or west coast or the east coast so I completely agree with anyone who says states like Kansas and Missouri don’t produce much college talent.

Woody, we repeat, this is not to put your observations down the toilet. It is respectful that your school can contend year in and year out. But, you have to understand that this is not the Naismith days. Kansas is a hillbilly, cow growing, middle of no place town where it is hard to fathom something sketchy not going on. I mean come on, half the people in Lawrence are missing teeth due to their terrible tobacco chewing habits. Who is their right mind would want to spend 1-4 yrs. in that town?

Please…. let’s put this in perspective.

This is really a no-brainer regardless how educated the observer maybe. The only opinions we care about are that of Selby, Lamb, and Jack. Perfect weather, perfect SoCal girls, great school, 13K in attendance on avg.(sell out), excellent facilities, NBA ties (long, long list, up with UNC, DUKE). Enough said!

Only reason Mrs. W. elects Kansas would be to obtain an acceptance into the Mercedes preferred customer list within a few months time?

I agree with you that the coasts traditionally have the top recruits, but saying the midwest has recruits like harrison barnes are 1 in a billion is not true. the odds are not quite that low.

You obviously dont pay too much attention to st. louis area basketball because Bradley Beal (Florida commit) is a monster in the class of 2011 from St. Louis.

Perry Ellis from Wichita is already one of the top recruits for the class of 2012. Kansas City usually has 1 or 2 good players a year. Iowa has produced its fair share of talent over the years (Nick Collison, Kirk Hinrich, Raef Lafrentz and Barnes)

As much as i dislike him, Tyler Hansbrough was from Missouri. Im not sure if you count Chicago as midwest or not but alot of great players have come from there.

The midwest isn’t as good as the coasts, but alot of good players have come out of the midwest.

    Give me a break CatintheAZ,

i live in Lawrence, have all my teeth, don’t own any cattle, don’t chew tobacco etc… you obviously have never been to Lawrence. you have sadly mistaken us for our little brothers out west in Manhattan (K state). Where everything you mentioned is accurate.

also, i have a hard time Selby would rather play in the mckale center than Allen Fieldhouse. we sell out all our games too, seat more people than you, on TV more, have better basketball tradition, have NBA ties and top notch facilities, basketball obsessed town…(see, we can play this game too)

I would like you to show me some shred of evidence you have KU pays its players to go there. (and dont give me the Roy williams graduation crap)

i don’t hate arizona, but even if i did i wouldn’t go spewing off ridiculous things about the state of arizona or tuscon in general. I have been to Tucson and I like it. its a nice place to live.
if you have something valuable to say i would love to hear it, if not, don’t waste all of our time.

Lawrence is a nice town I have family there. KU has one of the most beautiful campuses and one of the richest traditions in college bball. And they have good Bud. But Selby seems like a NIKE kind of guy and last time I checked KU is a lame Addidas School.

    March 01, 2010, 8:47AM at 8:47 am #

CATintheAZ, you should do some research regarding where Lawrence is located. I’m only 30 minutes from campus and the county that I live and work in had the nation’s 46th highest per-capita income (as of 2005). It also had the third highest EBI (Estimated Buying Income) in the nation. So saying we’re just a bunch of farmers and hicks obviously makes you feel better, but it’s not exactly true.

You are right about one thing, however, once Josh gets to Lawrence he will have a more dependable car.

Yeah, adidas really sucks. I’m tired of being unoriginal & not having the same cookie-cutter Nike unis like UA has. The electrical tape on the shoulders is a nice touch. However, I noticed that you guys weren’t elite enough to get the new ones with the images on the back. Why is that? Nike developers couldn’t figure out any tradition other than just a picture of Lute?

Dont know why woody but those new jerseys you are refering to that duke has are gay.

Yeah, I’m not much a fan of the Mizzou uniforms (or their program). Did you happen to see those awful football uni’s they wore at the end of the season? I didn’t realize that gunmetal grey was a part of their school colors? The good news is I heard they donated the helmets to Whiteman Air Force Base:

beardown, are there a lot of MU grads in the St. Louis area? The reason I ask is that we laugh at their fans in KC because most of them didn’t even go there–they went to some directional Mizz-u-rah school instead. But make no mistake, beating KU is their NCAA Championship.

  18. beardown3232
    March 01, 2010, 10:20PM at 10:20 pm #

Its the same thing in St. Louis.

I personally can’t stand Mizzou. They make the elite eight and they act they are the champions. Although I am not a fan of KU, I completely respect your athletic program. I say this in no disrespect, there must be something awfully special in Lawrence for you to be able to attract world class recruits to play at a school in the middle of farm land. Just like there is something special in Tucson,( which is in the middle of nowhere basically and it is over 100 degrees for at least 4 months of the year) for us to get some of the best basketball players like Richard Jefferson, Mike Bibby, Andre Iguodala and of course Agent Zero. But Mizzou on the other hand, they consider Jon Hamm the best athlete they ever produced because he played football at a high school in St. Louis. I do happen to know someone that played with him.

To be fair, they did technically produce Ian Kinsler of the Texas Rangers but that was after he transferred from a baseball powerhouse, ASU, because he did not get enough playing time, playing behind Dustin Pedroia. Here is a list of former Mizzou athletes courtesy of Wikipedia. I don’t think one is a household name.

  19. beardown3232
    March 01, 2010, 10:25PM at 10:25 pm #

Compare that to KU’s alumni and I wouldn’t really consider your rivalry a rivalry.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_University_of_Kansas_people#Athletes_and_coaches

Although Arizona is no where near where Kansas is in basketball right now, we are still on the same level in athletics overall. Mizzou however, is not.

Woody, that is the best comment you have had to date; quite refreshing. Mark this down, we will be in a BCS game come 2010. In 2012 with Daxx Garman and the 5 star recruit/transfer from UT Austin, we should be competing for the BCS title.

Now, back to bball. The UA bball squad really has work to do. Transformation needs to start this week starting 4 freshmen and Wise at the 2 guard. Once Parrom comes back, we can talk about inserting him for valuable minutes. This team can and should win the “WAC9″ tourney.

Let’s all hope we can pull off a 6 game W streak entering the NCAAs. Wouldn’t that be a story, a team full of freshmen emerging at the end of the season, as it will def. catch Mr. Selby’s eyes and have him join the party. Also, there will be plenty of room for Mr. Lamb and Mr. Jack….

Prediction. 19-14 regular season. Sweet 16 appearance. BOOK IT!

This is actually quite refreshing, WildCats and Jayhawks getting along!?!? I haven’t seen this since Jessie appeared around here which now seems like he’s been here forever. I don’t hate jesse I actually find his postings comical and a guy who speaks his mind without caring what anybody thinks. Now UA needs to land Selby and Lamb, then hope that Mayes retracts his commitment and allow KJack to commit or T Jones cause were gonna need help up front. Now any three of those plus D. Bejarano will make a pretty impressive class, and seeing how weak the Pac is we’ll definatly be in contention next year for a Conference Champions and a deep NCAA run. I know its all wishing and speculation now but it doens’t hurt to hope.

WOuld it be great to see Ray McCallum actually go to Kansass.
His visit to Kansass was so-so.

Miller finally saw the light with Ray.
Never believed that Ray was in a win-win situation with Arizona.

    Unlike Josh Selby.
The West sees a very good match with JS and Arizona.
As well as D-Lamb and Arizona.

    The big question is…
KJ is the East coast version of Derrick Williams.
Or another up & coming star like
    Jordan Hill.

    Which one?
    Either one is very good.

    Note:
Did Zonawildcat ever see the LIGHT?
    NOT even after being spoonfeed!
    Go read about Daniel Bejarano.
    Read about USC Timmie.

I like what Jerry Meyer had to say on the subject:

“Elite 2010 prospect Josh Selby was unable to visit UConn last weekend, and his Kentucky visit is now also up in the air. What do these developments mean, if anything, when it comes to his pending commitment? It means one Big 12 program may have the upper hand.”

I’m sure Jessie will come along shortly and tell us that Meyer was actually referring to Nebraska or Iowa State.
