Selby Set to Visit UConn; Wright Leaves Friars; Stokes Apologizes for Incident

By Adam Zagoria on February 26, 2010, 4:43PM

Josh Selby is set to visit UConn this weekend and attend Sunday’s game against Louisville despite the massive snowstorm blanketing the Northeast.

“Everything is going well and yes everything is on for UConn,” Maeshon Witherspoon, Selby’s mother, told Alex Kline of BoxofMess.com.

The 6-foot-2, 185-pound Selby is down to four schools: Arizona, Kansas, Kentucky and UConn.

He had initially cut the Huskies from his list but now they are back on.

“Actually, we had a relationship with UConn first,” Witherspoon told the Baltimore Sun. “They were on the list. We kind of had some miscommunication, so we talked about it and worked it back out.”

A McDonald’s All-American, Selby is averaging more than 30 points, 7 rebounds and 7 assists for Baltimore (Md.) Lake Clifton.

UConn is also involved with senior guards Brandon Knight, Cory Joseph and Doron Lamb.

WRIGHT LEAVES FRIARS

Kyle Wright, a 6-6, 215-pound junior from Hartford, Conn., is leaving the Providence basketball team, according to the Providence Journal.

Wright was averaging 2.8 points and 1.7 rebounds, while shooting just 36 percent from the floor.

He said his lack of playing time combined with his academic workload motivated him to leave the team. He is pursuing a double major in business management and sociology.

“I was required to take more credits than any other student,” Wright told the Providence Journal. “They accepted 70 credits and it normally takes 116 to graduate. I need 140 credits. It would be possible (to graduate and keep playing basketball), but I was in a position where I had to do everything perfectly. I had to fit everything in perfectly.”

Providence has three players committed for next season and now has an extra scholarship to use.

The Friars are involved with 6-3 point guard Bryon Allen of St. Thomas More; 6-9 forward Kadeem Jack of Manhattan Rice; 6-6 Joel “Air Jamaica” Wright, who previously committed to Fordham; 6-4 shooting guard Trey Ziegler of Michigan Mount Pleasant; and 6-9 power forward Jon Horford of Michigan Grand Ledge.

STOKES APOLOGIZES FOR INCIDENT

Corey Stokes apologized to his Villanova teammates after getting a citation for public urination early Thursday morning.

“It’s embarrassing,” Stokes said, according to Terry Toohey of the Delco Times. “I apologized and I learned from my mistakes.”

Villanova coach Jay Wright said he wasn’t certain whether he would punish the 6-5 junior by not playing him against Syracuse in Saturday’s Big East tilt. It sounds like Stokes will play, but may not start.

“I’m still thinking about it,” Wright said, according to the DelcoTimes. “He’s fine with me and the team. He apologized to the team. It was a simple college student’s mistake. He was not drunk and so with me he’s fine. It’s just a matter of what I think about with the team, but he’s playing and it’s just going to be a matter if we make a little decision. It’s not a major deal to me or the team.”

The original story was first reported Thursday afternoon by ZAGSBLOG.COM, and credited by USA Today and Deadspin.

Maeshon Witherspoon needs to put a sock in it. Im tired of her being a one women promotion team. Talk about milking your son for all hes worth. Selbys recruitment isnt about school/teams/programs/history/etc… its about which school will get him the league fastest so Meashon can get herself a brand new house and Mercedes.

Shes a micro-manager and wont keep her mouth shut even long after Josh has picked and played for a school.

    fuck off lady.

I hope Josh has a great visit to UConn. He couldn’t have picked a more important game to watch, and it’s senior day. I would love to see Selby and Walker in the backcourt for the Huskies next year!

This article is inaccurate. Josh Selby HAS visited UConn. He paid his own way and drove up to school in August

It would be interesting to see how many of those Elite Guards Calhoun could land. Calhoun is the real New England. I should however post some trash talk since neither JessieWildcat or pastaboy have written on this portion yet. So…. Uconnvict something something stolen laptops.

    Selby is an Arizona lock.

He will do to ‘Zona what Wall did to ‘Tucky.

Why would he want to be just another replacement or live in another’s shadow?

Selby’s going to create his own legacy. He’s ready for his own stage.

Sean Miller (stud PG himself) and Arizona.

i would put money on Lamb and Selby going somewhere other than Arizona. Arizona is being considered by both but ultimately neither will land there. Say hello to Kadeem Jack as your best recruit.

There is a reason that the top 3 PG’s all have UConn on their final list, and despite what posters on here think I would be shocked if they don’t land one. D Lamb also has the huskies up there. Zona is on the outside looking in in term of recruiting. Kansas, Kentucky and UConn is where these PG’s are going

Let’s face it, this is Calhoun’s last year. At least last guaranteed year.

Top recruits just can’t risk it. They just can’t. I hope the best for Jim, but this story has been played out many times, and it won’t change now.

Reminds me of Lute’s last days. Gaddy committed twice, Jennings was coming, Bayless came. But in the end, they were dealing with a great coach who was on the last days of his career.

The characters change, but the plot remains the same.

  16. RockChalkWoody
    February 26, 2010, 8:31PM at 8:31 pm #

That’s bs. Jennings didn’t come because he couldn’t make grades. You guys were slipping even before Lute lost his mind.

As for Calhoun, I watched UConn play the other night and he was jumping around and acting like a coach that isn’t leaving anytime soon. Why would a big-time recruit want to go out west and never be seen on TV (Fox Sports sucks) when you can be on ESPN all of the time (and most of the country is still awake when you play)?

  17. HuskiesNYC
    February 26, 2010, 8:47PM at 8:47 pm #

Calhoun has already agreed to a 5 year extension but has not yet signed it. He’s telling recruits he’ll be in Storrs for another 5 years minimum. He looked pretty healthy against WVU getting T’d up and rallying the boys to another top 10 win. Calhoun desperately wants that 3rd National Title and I will be shocked if he isn’t back, and a maniac on the sidelines next year. You haven’t heard the last classic postgame from Coach C.

  18. bosybillups
    February 26, 2010, 8:49PM at 8:49 pm #

Calhoun jumping around? Could be senile already.

And who would want to go out west? I don’t know, you might want to ask the 23 big time recruits who were drafted in the first and second rounds the last 2 years, more than any other conference by a very long shot, why they would want to play out west. 23. Go and ask them son.

  19. bosybillups
    February 26, 2010, 8:56PM at 8:56 pm #

Lute actually signed an extension to 2014. Health supersedes contracts.

I’m pulling for Calhoun as he’s one of the last old school greats, but his health is first priority.

  20. HuskiesNYC
    February 26, 2010, 9:00PM at 9:00 pm #

Calhoun doesn’t have Lute Olson Syndrome yet. He’s also not the type of guy to abandon his team for a full year because he was having trouble at home. 67 is not that old in the coaching world and he’s as sharp as ever. The media has never given Calhoun a fair shake . They are just making a big deal out of nothing. You’re reading too much into what (morons) like Pat Forde think.

  21. bosybillups
    February 26, 2010, 9:07PM at 9:07 pm #

Lute left mid-season because he had a stroke, and the family problems at home were consequences of the stroke.

Calhoun left in the middle of this season and came back. He missed important games in the NCAA tourney. I don’t think a coach as passionate as Calhoun would miss such games unless it was a real necessity, if you catch my drift.

I hope he is around for a lot longer, but bodies are not meant to last forever. It sucks, but we can’t hide from reality. 67 is not that old, true, but we all age differently.

This does not tarnish is greatness or his ability to coach, but talking about recruiting, it does creep into the back of the mind.

  22. HuskiesNYC
    February 26, 2010, 9:38PM at 9:38 pm #

Yes, I agree with most of what you said. However, I do feel that Calhoun has a history of missing games for motivational reasons. This season is a little different. I think he left for a couple weeks bc he couldn’t handle a team that he loves and has NBA players losing to teams like Providence. The pending recruitng investigation (over a guy that never played) has been nagging at Calhoun. Personally I don’t think he will retire due to health reasons. As a UConn fan, I can’t imagine the program without him.

    February 26, 2010, 10:21PM at 10:21 pm #

I’m not your son & what did those 23 big-time recruits do for your program? You guys are a joke. You want to be a part of the Big 6 so bad and you’re not. You UA guys constantly talk about all your NBA talent. 4 Final Fours and 1 NCAA Championship? $hit, the Jayhawks just went to three Final Fours in the last decade.

bosy, once you said that Selby was a “lock” you lost all credibility with anything else you say. Save your energy for the NIT, son.

  24. bosybillups
    February 27, 2010, 12:20AM at 12:20 am #

Alright, he’s not a lock, obviously. But the more this drags on, the more Arizona makes sense.

Calipari and Self are pushing hard for Knight, but only one will get him (unless he goes to Florida). Anyway, they are great programs. No debate.

But there is something fresh and invigorating about Sean Miller and what he is about to do with Arizona. A school with a great coach and staff (including one of the top fitness coaches in Chris Rounds), a great campus, great weather, great education, great sports program, great basketball town, great girls, great vibe, etc. And Miller turning a program around that was very recently dominant year in and year out – a fun to watch, elite NBA factory… It would be a great national story for Selby to be the next great guard out of there, and Sean Miller’s first real big fish, and having Lute in the stands watching it all unfold.

OR, he can do the usual and go to Larry Kansas for a year, play on another good Kansas team, play for Self, because it’s the “thing to to”. Ho hum. OR, he go to Kentucky and be compared to John Wall the whole time and try to make a new dance step.

All reports are that Kansas leads, but who knows if WWW and Calipari start throwing the Nike stuff at them.

Anyway, the cool move for him would be Arizona. That’s what I would do and what I would want my son to do because Sean Miller and Book and the staff are genuine and legit. He can dominate the Pac-10. Get Freshmen and Pac-10 player of the year. And enter the draft as a top 5 pick and play with the dozens of other Arizona Wildcats.

    It just makes sense.

    WoodyJayhawk-

    A couple things:

FIrst of all, read the posts before you run your mouth. You asked, who would want to play out west? The answer was 23 big time recruits. He was referring to the number of Pac 10 players drafted in the past two years, not UofA players. While the number is actually 21, it is 8 more, yes 8 more, than the second highest conference the past two years (which is a big reason why the Pac 10 is so down this year, although I will admit it should never be this bad, even if 50 guys were drafted). So, I guess some guys who want to go to the NBA would consider playing out west.

Second, you saying Arizona is a joke is a far more dumber statement than saying Selby is a lock (which I don’t agree with either). If Arizona is a joke, why are Selby and Lamb even considering going there? They are considering UofA along with KU and UK. I wonder why if they are a joke.

Third, if Arizona is a joke, what does that make you? No, not KU, or KU fans, but you WoodyJayhawk. You bite every time a UofA fan says anything. You sure are insecure for a KU fan.

Fourth, the big 6? No, it’s the big 4 (which, of course, KU is a part of). But for the sake of your lame argument, let’s say UofA wants in. Is it a shame to be 7th, or 10th, or 12th best basketball program? Are you that shortsighted? Is 7th that bad? 12th?

Fifth, if KU is the standard (which they arguably are, along with the other three), why do you constantly riducule programs that can’t match KU’s success and history? Just because UofA isn’t KU by no means makes it a joke, or a bad program. Far from it actually. And to ridicule programs that can’t match KU’s success actually belittles KU’s accomplishments

Above all, UofA has nothing to be ashamed of, not to a KU fan, UCLA fan, or UNC fan. Four final fours in 22 years is pretty good. One title is nothing to sneeze at. KU has what two, the last forty years? Point is, it is very hard to win a title, even for KU. Dean Smith has two titles and he is considered one of the best ever (so does Roy Williams cough).

    Get a clue.

She’s actually much more tactful through the recruitment than Tywanna “The Human Press Conference” Patterson, mother of Patrick Patterson.

In terms of the son, the breaking of his verbal agreement, while Bruce Pearl was coaching overseas in the Maccabiah Games last summer, was certainly a rough one.

I am so tired of reading RockChalkDummy here run his mouth about his prominent KU program. Dude, seriously get a life. You bag JessieWildcat all the time, though, if you look real close; You are as delusional as he is.

Look, Bosy was ill advised claiming he (Selby) is UA lock. Though, you really need to stop acting you are Mr.Basketball Guru on this site.

At the very least, you must agree with a couple of valid points, loser. UA is a playboy party school (hottest SoCal chicks), great weather, great school, and a REAL PT. GUARD COACH. All Self has got is deep pockets. Don’t make it seem like he developed this empire. That program was left at tip-top shape under Williams.

I will give you this, Selby will get much more lime-light type exposure at KU. Big 12 games are constantly on ESPN. That is about it, other than he may get a hummer sooner than expected. hmmmm…….

I have a question for all of those who think it is so important for players to be on ESPN. Who needs to see these guys play? Family and scouts, right? NBA scouts go to games (NBA scouts know how to get to Tucson, Lexington, Durham etc.) and the family can watch on T.V. or internet from the University the kid is playing for. Also Woody do you really think Selby or any recruit pays for there own unoffical visits I for one think teh most talented players do not, no matter what University they are visiting.

Woody I thought your comment about unc/uofa nit title game was hilarious. I took exception to calling UofA a joke. You do, I admit, put up with a lot of crap from us UofA fans. But I think its because you always bite and because your distaste for Jessie has caused you to hate UofA.

Michael, I do not hate UA. I think Sean Miller is a fine coach & there’s no doubt in my mind that he will get you guys back to a higher level. And I still think your Cats have a shot at Lamb, but not Selby.

As for Jessie, I know it’s easy for you guys to just look the other way, but it’s complete bs to sit & ignore his constant jabs at Bill Self & the program (what kind of an a-hole posts the same youtube video over & over again of a van picking up players after the fighting on campus?). I will not do it. If that means I have to take crap from CatintheAZ, etc. that’s okay.

If I came here and made a bunch of wild accusations about your program (i.e., Cactus Classic smack) I would expect you guys to rip me.

Look at James Harden who played for ASU last year. The guy was a top 5 pick in the NBA draft and played for ASU!

ASU is FAR from a basketball school. Hell, only half of their games are televised, they only fill half of the stadium every game, and yet James Harden STILL was a top 5 pick without ANY exposure!

The point is it doesn’t matter how much exposure they have, whether they are playing on ESPN or FSN, if the kid can ball and is a top talent, they are going to get noticed no matter what and James Harden proved that theory.

At this point going forward, we are playing with strictly freshmen. Our team will be at an elite level some next year. Do not count this team out winning the PAC10 tourney. That’s right you heard it here first, I will say they have the highest probability of winning that garbage tourney. They really are the best team out west by far… Start Momo, Solo, Parrom, Williams, Naty. That should and will be the lineup going forward. Next year with the addition of DB, Selby, Lamb and Jack would put us in the final four within a year’s time. All of you non-wildcat fans banking on our 1 scholarship left for 2010 are not very well informed. Miller will be cleaning house and bringing in his OWN recruits, and he will drop Lute’s old table scraps to waste. Really these guys are not “ARIZONA GOOD”. We will clean up house, and the recruits mentioned above are aware of that.

IF, that is a big IF, we somehow win the PAC10 tourney; Recruits will come and join the party. This team will be built Miller’s way. It is certaintly approaching MILLER TIME. BOOK IT!

About the Cactus Classic, ol’ Lute was not the coordinator of that mess. Now, I don’t want to belittle your opinions, but calling UA a joke is flat out garbage talk. Since the loss to the Illini in the elite 8 back in 05′, our team has not been elite. Though, it had everything to do with Lute’s health status. This in itself prevented an open pipeline for recruits to join in. Now that Miller is in, he will cleanup the mess. Keep the players that can play his style of uptempo ball.

Should be absolutely NO reason to call our program a joke… Sure we have not been elite but always a top 2-3 program out west.

You will be eating those words come next yr.
