Nova’s Wright Rooting for Phillies; Big East Notes

By Adam Zagoria on October 29, 2008, 10:32AM

With Game 5 of the World Series finally set to resume tonight in Philly, you can guess who Villanova coach Jay Wright is rooting for.

“We have the middle three games in Philadelphia so selfishly I’d like it to go at least five so we can get to those games,” Wright said at Big East Media Day. “There’s nothing better than being in Citizens Bank Park for a Phillies game. I’m going to get down there when I can and I definitely have the Phillies in five.”

OK, Jay. We’ll see if you’re right.

Here’s more from Coach Wright, as well as Georgetown coach John Thompson III and Louisville coach Rick Pitino…. (more…)

Durand Scott Down to Three

By Adam Zagoria on October 28, 2008, 3:39PM

Durand Scott is down to three schools and could decide relatively soon.

The 6-foot-4 Scott, the No. 9 shooting guard in the Class of 2009 according to Rivals, will choose from among Miami, UConn and Pittsburgh, the three schools to which he has taken officials. Planned official visits to UCLA and Tennessee never happened and those schools are out of the mix.

“There’s no more visits scheduled. This is pretty much it,” Dwayne Mitchell, Scott’s coach with the New York Gauchos, said Tuesday by phone. “It’s pretty much the three that he visited. We’ll try and make a decision that makes sense.” (more…)

Pitt to Host Epps, Cheek This Weekend

By Adam Zagoria on October 28, 2008, 2:19PM

NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. — Pittsburgh will host a couple of high-profile guards from the Garden State this coming weekend.

St. Anthony senior Dominic Cheek will take an official visit, his third following trips to Kansas and Villanova, while Plainfield junior Isaiah Epps (pictured) will take an unofficial. The Panthers technically have one scholarship left for the Class of 2009.

We’ve already covered the Cheek scenario in another post, so let’s focus on the 6-foot-2 Epps, who played for the Jersey juniors last weekend at the Eddie Griffin Challenge at Rutgers.

“I should be going out there [to Pitt] next weekend,” he said. “I don’t have any favorite schools. I’m open for anything.” (more…)
