  • Gonzo High on Lawrence; Seton Hall Notes

I might be driving my car into submission by going back and forth from the Reebok All-American Camp in Philly to the Hoop Group events at The College of New Jersey, and my back hurts a little as well, but you know what they say, No pain, no gain…Anyway, here are some Seton Hall notes from the day…

**Pirates head coach Bobby Gonzalez and assistant Scott Adubato were on hand in Philly today watching games. Gonzo is very excited about Missouri transfer Keon Lawrence of Newark, who dropped 25 points in a loss at Kansas last year and 24 in a loss at Texas Tech and whom Gonzo thinks is a potential “pro.”

The SHU coaches, and many other heavyweights, including Rick Pitino and Billy Donovan, watched an afternoon game between the Jason Terry team that features juniors Jayvaughn Pinkston of Bishop Loughlin and Ashton Pankey of St. Anthony and senior Karron Johnson of Mt. Zion against the Official HexRide team that has senior Danny Jennings and junior Tobias Harris of Dix Hills Half Hollows West. Let’s just say this game was loaded.

**Seton Hall has offered the following players ships (although this is not an all-inclusive list): senior Dominic Cheek of St. Anthony, who just made the USA U-18 team; senior forward Tevin Baskin of Stamford (Conn.) Trinity Catholic; junior guard Kyrie Irving of St. Patrick; junior guard Isaiah Epps of PLainfield, who was not at the camp because of injury; forward Derrick Williams of St. Anthony; junior forwards Fuquan Edwin and Trevor Clemmings and junior guard Jayon James, all of Paterson Catholic; and Seton Hall Prep sophomore guard Sterling Gibbs.

Speaking of the 6-5 Edwin, a super-athletic forward, he told me USC, Marquette and Providence were currently sending him a ton of mail. Rutgers and The Hall have both offered.

I also caught up with Irving at TCNJ. He holds offers from Rutgers, Seton Hall, St. Joe’s and Texas A&M. he was named the Most Outstanding Prospect and was selected to the Top 20 All-Star Game at the Hoop Group Elite Camp.

He recently visited Seton Hall with his dad and had this to say.

“It was a good visit. I talked  to Coach Gonzalez. We talked about my scholarship and everything, all the players. I was hanging out with Paul Gause and he took me around campus and showed me a good time.

“This is just the beginning. i think this was my second visit. When I was a freshman I went to St. Joseph’s.

“I’m just looking for the program that’s going to fit me.

“Once (Keon Lawrence) signed with Seton Hall, Coach Gonzalez called my father and told him that he was coming, and that’s a good land.”
