Chris_gastonChris Gaston, a 6-foot-7, 205-pound combo forward from St. Benedict’s Prep, has given an oral commitment to Fordham University and will enroll in the fall of 2009.

Gaston, who spent four years at St. Anthony under Bob Hurley and a fifth on the St. Ben’s prep team under Dan Hurley, will enroll at another prep school for a sixth year next season before arriving at Fordham.

“Fordham is close to home,” Gaston said. “(Fordham commits) Jio Fontan and Alberto Estwick (of St. Anthony) are good friends of mine. I really wanted to go to Fordham. It’s close to home. My parents can come watch me play and it’s in a nice area in the Bronx. They’re trying to help me out to get to the school so i think it’s a good fit.

“I’m going to prep, I’m not sure what school I’m going to go to though,” Gaston added. “I think (assistant coach) Coach (Jared) Grasso is going to send me to Hargrave Military Academy (Va.) or Brewster Academy (N.H.).”

Gaston said he plans to take the SAT May 1 and that he could potentially qualify for next season if he make its through the NCAA Clearinghouse.

Fordham has five incoming recruits for this year, including Fontan, a 6-foot point guard from Paterson who was named third-team All-State, and Estwick, a 6-4 guard from Jersey City.

Fordham has also offered three players from Paterson Catholic, sophomores Jayon James and Shaq Thomas and junior Lance Brown.
