Ebanks Gets Release from IU, Considering West Virginia

By Adam Zagoria on March 27, 2008, 10:22PM

Ebanks_indianaDevin Ebanks secured his release from Indiana Wednesday and is considering four schools as his future destination.

The 6-foot-9 Ebanks, a Long Island City, N.Y. native who is a senior at St. Thomas More (Conn.), told Jeff Goodman of FoxSports.com that he’s considering Texas, Memphis, Rutgers and a new player in the mix, West Virginia. Indiana apparently still has a slim shot.

“Those are my top four and the only ones I’ll look at,” Ebanks told Goodman. “I’m going to schedule visits to all four of them.

“I’m going to look for a school that had some of the same things I liked in Indiana. I want to go somewhere I can develop, play right away and have a great relationship with my coach.”

Ebanks, the No. 13 recruit in the Class of 2008, asked out of his commitment to IU in the wake of the recruiting violations scandal that took down former IU coach Kelvin Sampson.

Before he had secured the release, no colleges were permitted to speak with Ebanks or his mother, Yvonne Jackson. Now there is sure to be a feeding frenzy for his services.

“We’ll still see what happens,” Ebanks said. “I’m going to stay in contact and not going to completely write Indiana off.”

Ebanks told Goodman he will try and take a few visits in the next month. Texas, Memphis and West Virginia are still alive in the NCAA tournament.

Rutgers, which did not qualify for a postseason event, has had a big week, gaining commitments from 6-8 St. Benedict’s Prep junior Greg Echenique, who turned down Duke, Maryland, Villanova and Notre Dame, among others, to play for Fred Hill, as well as 6-7 Blair Academy junior Austin Johnson.

Rutgers commit Mike Rosario of national champion St. Anthony of Jersey City also scored 18 points in Wednesday night’s McDonald’s All-American Game. Ebanks was snubbed from the game because he’s a fifth-year senior.

Coach Hurley on Pankey, Cheek, Rosario

By Adam Zagoria on March 27, 2008, 10:14PM

Dom_cheek_playaz_use_thisThe AP All-State meeting was held today at the Home News Tribune, and though I’m not at liberty to divulge the teams because it will be officially released in a newspaper near you Tuesday, I think it’s safe to say at least a couple of St. Anthony kids made the list.

In talking to St. Anthony coach Bob Hurley going into the meeting, here are some interesting comments from him on the future of his team, namely Ashton Pankey and Dominic Cheek. The 6-8 Pankey is a sophomore big man who is in the process of enrolling at the Jersey City school after he withdrew from Archbishop Molloy following a situation where he was found with a stolen SideKick on school Grounds.

“The last marking period at St. Anthony begins April 7, so if he (Pankey) was coming into school, that would be the first day he would be in school, starting the last marking period for St. Anthony,” Hurley said.
“I met the mom and said hello to them, but I really don’t know anything about him at all. I’ve been told he’s a pretty good player.”

I hope to have an interview with Pankey from the Spring Fling this weekend at Seton Hall sponsored by the Playaz Basketball Club.

As for the 6-5 Cheek and his recruiting status, Hurley said:

“I would say UConn, Texas, Florida, Villanova, Wake Forest are all schools that have been in. They’re the ones that we’ve seen the most. Certainly Seton Hall has been there.”

Hurley said the other day that Rutgers may have helped itself with Cheek by getting commitments from Greg Echenique and Austin Johnson, but he seemed to indicate it was more a case of Mike Rosario exerting pressure on Cheek to seriously consider Rutgers.

“We’re still on the rubber chicken circuit, so we have a couple things to do next week,” Hurley added. “Then we’ll probably sit down and maybe make a list.”

Rosario_rutgers_photoAnd what were coach’s thoughts on Rosario’s 18-point performance in Wednesday’s McDonald’s All-American Game?

“If he hit that 3 from the left corner late in the game, he may have been the MVP,” Hurley said. “We’re excited for him because he managed to get in there. He wasn’t in the McDonald’s consideration when the season started. Because of our success and his success, he kind of worked his way in there and he looked very comfortable.

Travon_action_use_ethis“Just like Travon (Woodall) went out and won the MVP (in the Team USA vs. Florida Senior Showcase). They’re all good. When they get out there individually and they join teams, I think people realize what good all-around players they are.”

Evans, Rosario Lead East in McDonald’s All-Star Game

By Adam Zagoria on March 27, 2008, 7:35PM

Brandon_jennings_slam_mickey_dsTyreke Evans was named MVP of the McDonald’s All-American Game after scoring 21 points and grabbing 10 rebounds in the East’s 107-102 victory Wednesday over the West at the Bradley Center in Milwaukee.

Rutgers-bound guard Mike Rosario had a stellar game for the East, scoring 18 points on f-13 shooting to go with five steals. He was 1-of 4 from 3 and had a nice breakaway dunk. Lightning quick UConn commit Kemba Walker was also very impressive in scoring 13 points. Arizona-bound point guard Brandon Jennings, sporting an old-school high-top fade, flashed his passing skills and athleticism while tallying 10 points and nine assists for the West.

Evans, one of two undecided players in the game, will announce his college choice April 16 on ESPNU and will decide between Memphis, Texas, UConn and Villanova. Somebody might want to wake up ESPN announcer Thom Brennan and let him in on it. At one point, Brennan was asked for his best guess on where the 6-6 Evans would end up and he said, “My best guess is he’ll leave Philadelphia, so I say Louisville, Tennessee or Texas.” Two of those three schools aren’t even recruiting Evans.

If you’re Rutgers, you couldn’t ask for a better week of publicity. First Fred Hill’s staff lands commitments from 6-8 St. Benedict’s junior Greg Echenique and 6-7 Blair Academy junior Austin Johnson on Monday. Then Rosario goes out and plays with the 23 best players in the nation, garnering free press for Rutgers on ESPN.

“I’m very excited,” Rosario told me for a story before the game. “It was just something that I dreamed about since I was a kid. I looked at TV and went, ‘Wow, those guys are going to be labeled as McDonald’s All-Americans.”

In the girls game, five Rutgers commits participated, with RU-bound Brooklyn Pope scoring 13 points and future teammate Nikki Speed adding nine points, four assists and two steals in a victory for the West. Pope and Speed were named Co-MVPs.

Evans Down to 4 Schools

By Adam Zagoria on March 26, 2008, 11:40PM

Tyrekeville799301Tyreke Evans of American Christian is at the McDonald’s All-American Game in Milwaukee and told Jerry Meyer of Rivals that he is down to four schools: UConn, Memphis, Texas and Villanova. Evans plans to announce his decision during a press conference April 16. In the meantime, he’ll keep an eye on the NCAA tournament. Memphis, Texas and Villanova are still alive.

“I want to wait so I can look at how the coaches coach during the tournament,” Evans said at the McDonald’s practices. “I want to see if they change their game plan or stick to what they have been doing all season.”

Evans, who averaged 29 points and eight assists, said he will study the guard play in the tournament.

“I want to go to a school where there is a lot of guard play and where I can be in a situation to improve at things I’m not used to doing,” he said. “I want to mix it up and have the ball and also work off a lot of screens. I’ve been watching USC games, and I see O.J. (Mayo) come off a lot of screens away from the ball. I’ve never really done that because I’ve always had the ball in my hands.”

Evans added that he will make one more visit to Villanova when he gets home.

“I took my last visit to Memphis, but when I go home, Villanova wants me to come up there and visit,” he said. “So I’ll do that when I get home.”

The Philly Inquirer ran a listing of odds on which school Evans will pick, saying Memphis (6-1) was the favorite. Texas was 13-1 and Louisville, now out of the running, was 20-1.

Dom Cheek Update; Hurley, Woodall Honored

By Adam Zagoria on March 26, 2008, 10:25PM

Dom_cheek_playaz_use_thisSt. Anthony coach Bob Hurley says the recent commitments by Greg Echenique and Austin Johnson to Rutgers could help influence star junior Dominic Cheek.

“I think Rutgers helped themselves,” said Hurley, who was in Atlanta Tuesday where he was named the Naismith National High School of the Year at the Atlanta Tipoff Club. “I think that will help keep them on (Cheek’s) list, too. They got a big man there (Echenique). His very good friend (Mike Rosario) is there.”

Asked about Seton Hall, Hurley said, “They’re in there, too.”

Hurley said he had given his players two weeks off after completing a perfect 32-0 season and winning the Tournament of Champions and that Cheek would not focus on recruiting until after the break. The 6-foot-5 junior is being recruited by numerous schools, including Villanova, Texas, Florida, Ohio State and UConn.

“We haven’t done anything yet (with recruiting),” Hurley said. “We gave them two weeks off.”

By Adam Zagoria on March 26, 2008, 10:23PM

Rosario_use_thisThe Associated Press All-State basketball meeting is Thursday at the Home News Tribune. What happens is a group of sports reporters from  around the state (excluding the Ledger which picks its own team) gathers in a room and hashes out the teams. Basketball is much quicker and easier than football, which features larger teams. Keep in mind that St. Benedict’s and other prep schools are not included in the AP team, so Samardo Samuels and his teammates will not be included here. Obviously, Samuels would be a first-teamer if preps were included. At any rate, here are the ZAGSBLOG All-State teams for 2007-08. Fire away with your comments.

Echenique, Johnson Fallout: What’s Next for RU, SHU

By Adam Zagoria on March 25, 2008, 11:42PM

In the wake of the monumental commitments Rutgers obtained Monday from Greg Echenique and Austin Johnson, here are some questions and partial answers related to Rutgers, Seton Hall and New Jersey basketball.

Ebanks_indiana1. What does it mean for Devin Ebanks?

We spoke to a source close to the 6-9 Ebanks today and he said nothing much had changed. Ebanks has asked for his release from Indiana and is looking at Rutgers, Memphis and Texas and potentially another school. The source indicated that Ebanks wouldn’t make any visits until after the NCAA tournament. You would think the commitments of Greg Echenique and Austin Johnson, along with that of McDonald’s All-American Mike Rosario, would make the Rutgers situation more enticing, but we’ll have to see what develops…

2. What’s up with Gary Flowers?

We spoke to another source close to the 6-8 Flowers at Chipola (Fl.) College, who also said there was no breaking news on Tuesday. Chipola finished 7th at JUCO Nationals and there was talk Flowers might announce his college choice (possibly Seton Hall?) after the tournament. We hope to have an update soon.

3. What about Chris Turner?

Though we heard he was close to committing to Seton Hall after de-committing from Oregon State because of the coaching change, the 6-5 shooting guard has not yet committed, according to his high school coach, Carlos Wilson of Humble Christian Center Life. Kentucky, Seton Hall and  Wake Forest are his top three, according to a published report.

4. What does this say about St. Benedict’s?

Dwan_mcmillan_st_bensDan Hurley’s program had six players competing on Day One of the Big East tournament at Madison Square Garden: Corey Stokes and Frank Tchuisi (Villanova); Rashad Bishop (Cincinnati); David Cubillan and Dwight Burke (Marquette) and Eugene Harvey (Seton Hall).

This year, Hurley had three more players commit to Big East schools: seniors Samardo Samuels (Louisville) and Dwan McMIllan (South Florida) and junior Greg Echenique (Rutgers).

Meantime, Bob Hurley, Dan’s father and the coach at St. Anthony will send three players to the Big East next year: Rosario (Rutgers); Tyshawn Taylor (Marquette) and Travon Woodall (Pitt)?

Shouldn’t the Hurleys be getting a cut of Big East TV revenues with all that they’re contributing to this league?

5. How good is Rutgers commit Austin Johnson?

“Austin Johnson can be a good player for them,” Tom Konchalski of the High School Basketball Insider said. “He’s a terrific kid. The last year has really made him so much more assertive and tough playing at Blair Academy. He was a skill player at Cheltenham Academy. He had good skills and was a really good kid, but he was a suburban player. Playing for Joe Montegna at Blair Academy has made him much more assertive and toughened him up.

“He’s a very assertive player and a very active rebounder. He doesn’t take plays off. He can be a very, very serviceable four man in the Big East.

“Getting Echenique is a signature recruit for Fred Hill, and getting Austin Johnson is good, too.”

Echenique, Johnson to RU

By Adam Zagoria on March 24, 2008, 11:45PM

Echenique_ru_photo

With one big recruiting coup, Rutgers has landed two big men from the state of New Jersey.

Greg Echenique, a 6-foot-9 center from St. Benedict’s Prep in Newark, on Monday chose Rutgers over Duke, Maryland, Villanova, Creighton, Notre Dame, Miami and Penn.

Twenty minutes later, Austin Johnson, a 6-7, 190-pound junior forward from Blair Academy, called Rutgers head coach Fred Hill to commit. A native of Cheltenham, Pa. who plays for the Paterson-based Playaz Basketball Club, Johnson will make an unofficial visit to Rutgers Tuesday with his mother.

“That’s a fantastic frontcourt that they’re getting,” Blair coach Joe Mantegna said by phone. “The two of them complement each other perfectly. I don’t think they could’ve hoped for a better scenario than this.”

Echenique, ranked No. 45 in the Class of 2009 and No. 5 among centers, averaged 11.2 points, 9.2 rebounds and 3.3 blocks last season, when the Gray Bees finished 24-1 and No. 2 in several national polls. He will play next year for the St. Benedict’s fifth-year prep team because he already completed his freshman year of school in his native Venezuela.

Johnson averaged 19 points and 11 rebounds and was a first-team All-League selection in the Maple League. He chose Rutgers over Seton Hall, Boston College, Virginia, Fordham, Temple, St. Joe’s and other Atlantic 10 schools.

Echenique and his parents, Jose and Maria, decided after visiting Rutgers last Thursday. The parents were visiting from Venezuela.

“Since I came to this country with my parents, I felt a connection with the coaching staff,” Echenique said in a statement. “They were the first school to offer me a scholarship and they have been there watching me develop throughout my high school career.

“Coach Hill and Coach (Jimmy) Carr have always been there for me. They are people that I have been able to develop a great relationship with, and depend on as mentors. A big part of my decision was the belief that Coach Hill and his staff have in me to help them take the program to a higher level. The future is bright at Rutgers and I look forward to being a member of the school community.

“By going to St. Benedict’s Prep, New Jersey has become  a second home to me. I want other players to believe in Rutgers the way I do. What has always impressed me about the RAC and the Rutgers fans is that they love the basketball team and are supportive whatever the circumstances. Coach Hill and his staff and have convinced me and my family  that the balance of academics and athletics is a perfect fit for me. In the long run, what convinced me most was not the fact that they play in the Big East or the facilities, but it was the people who make up the program.”

Echenique’s parents said: “They have shown interest in Gregory since the beginning, not just as a player, but a young man. We trust Coach Hill and staff will treat him as a member of the family.”

Echenique is the first player from St. Benedict’s to pick Rutgers during Dan Hurley’s seven-year tenure at the school.

“The combination of it being a quality university, the Big East conference and an opportunity to control his own destiny on the court, and his relationship with the staff there, namely Freddie, Jimmy and Darren (Savino), makes it a great fit,” Hurley said.

“This is a big recruit because of the other schools involved with him, Duke, Maryland, Villanova,” recruiting analyst Tom Konchalski of the High School Basketball Insider said. “The symbolism of getting a Greg Echenique even exceeds his tangible contribution on the court. It shows that Rutgers can be successful within the state. This is a major recruit for them.”

Austinjohnson5_18150Johnson, who teams with Rutgers recruit Mike Rosario with the Playaz, told Justin Young of Rivals that he committed after he heard Echenique had.

“I was about to commit about a month ago but I wanted to wait until after the season was over just to clear my head,” Johnson said. “I was going to take a visit there tomorrow to tell them. When I heard Greg committed, that was just the icing on the cake.”

“I think it’s a great fit for Austin and Rutgers is getting a guy who’s a late bloomer and a guy with tremendous potential,” Mantegna said by phone. “He’s an inside-outside four man, a real versatile four.

“He’s lost 25 pounds. His confidence is sky high. His game has just gone leaps and bounds. He’s a whole different player than most people have seen out on the AAU circuit.”

Rutgers has a three-man recruiting class lined up for next year led by Rosario, the McDonald’s All-American who plays shooting guard for Dan’s father, Bob Hurley; Pat Jackson, a 6-6 wing from Brooklyn Boys & Girls; and Christian Morris, a 6-8 post from South Kent (Conn.) Rutgers also has a commitment from Dane Miller, a 6-7 wing from Rush Henrietta High outside Rochester, N.Y. Rutgers still has two scholarships left for the Class of 2009.

Konchalski said Echenique is exactly what Rutgers needs.

“He’s a big strong kid that knows who he is,” he said. “He doesn’t try to be a finesse player and loft 3′s. With (Corey) Chandler and Rosario, they have really good perimeter players, and they’ve goto to get some inside players, and that’s what he is. That’s the first step in anything, to know what you are.”

“You just hope that with guys like Gregory and Mike Rosario, and kids in the future, if you get enough of these types of guys, you just want it to be exciting around March Madness time,” Dan Hurley said. “The universities in New Jersey are great and the high school basketball in New Jersey is great and there’s no reason why kids shouldn’t continue their careers locally.”

Echenique and his parents made trips to several schools with St. Ben’s assistant coach Scott Smith, who lives in Ridgewood.

“It’s a big jump on (Greg’s) part and he really believes that (Rutgers) can get it done with the players that they have and Mike Rosario,” Smith said. “And hopefully this will persuade other kids to stay in state. This is a dream and he really wants to make this happen for the state.”

Pankey Visits St. Anthony

By Adam Zagoria on March 18, 2008, 6:43PM

Ashton_pankey_head_2Former Archbishop Molloy standout Ashton Pankey visited St. Anthony of Jersey City on Monday and hopes to enroll at the school after Easter break on March 31.

“Ashton Pankey from Archbishop Molloy was at school (Monday) with his family going through the registration process,” legendary St. Anthony coach Bob Hurley said Monday night after his team downed Science Park of Newark, 69-36, at the Izod Center to complete a perfect 32-0 season and win the 10th New Jersey Tournament of Champions crown in the 20-year history of the event.

Read the full story here. And check out the Daily News story with details on how and why Pankey left Molloy.
